Hello,
I have a little problem with displaying ID3 tags of mp3 files that are stored (and played) from a ntfs partitions. There is no ID3 tag info displayed when I open such a file. But, when I copy a particular file to my home directory (ext3 file system) and open it, I can see all ID3 tag information. How to make it work with files stored on ntfs? There is no such a problem, when I use another player (e.g. vlc). However, I prefer Amarok Could anybody help me to solve this issue? btw. I am using KDE 4.4, Amarok 2.2.2 or 2.2.3 (I am not sure now) on openSUSE 11.2. All access rights to ntfs partitions are all right. PS: I was looking for similar topics in this forum unfortunately I have not found anything useful. If there is a similar topic discussed already I am sorry for creating new thread. |

This issue is still not solved in Amarok v2.3.0 (KDE 4.4.0, OpenSUSE 11.2)

I know that I am the only one who discusses in this topic , however I made a little "investigation" today, and my results are quite weird.
1) At first I was not able to see any ID3tag info of any mp3 file in Amarok (in VLC everything was OK). But, I was trying to fix it somehow and I edited a couple of files in the Easytag tool, and then ID3tags of the edited files were shown in Amarok. Later, I realized that I do not have to do any changes of a particular file, just open and save. I do not understand why, but it works. 2) I also decided to create a collection of a couple of files and, like a miracle, this was also helpful, because I can see ID3 tags of files included in the collection now. BUT, when I modify a file from the collection (by Easytag), in Amarok, the tag is not updated (even when I fully rescan entire collection). My question is: Why?? 3) At last, I am wondering why some files (more particularly, tags) can be edited (are in white text-fields) and some not (are in gray text-fields) in Amarok. |

If you can't edit, or if your edits don't "stick" -- you have a permissions issue. You need read/write permission to edit.

Hello,
thanks for reply. Just one question: I have a file. I edit the ID3 tag of that file in EasyTag. I open the file in VLC and I can see the right ID3 information. But, I open the same file in Amarok and I see either nothing or the old ID3 values? Where is the problem? .... and do not tell me that the problem is in permissions since I can edit the file with EasyTag. |

I think your problem is that Amarok doesn't see/update tags once the albums been scanned into the collection if the tagger doesn't change the file date/time attribute. The reason VLC sees the new tags is it's reading them for the first time. For Amarok to work as you'd like the tagger option "to not preserve timestamp" must be unchecked - of course then those albums will be considered recently added (which isn't exactly true).
these threads might help: viewtopic.php?f=116&t=78503&hilit=amarok+tags+changed viewtopic.php?f=115&t=74785&p=117996&hilit=amarok+tags+changed#p117996 |

Correct. Amarok uses the "mtime" of the folders (not the files themselves!) that contain your music for detecting changes.

@markey is there any plans to change this behavior?
Like: - revisiting the actual tags when using "edit track details" or playing the track? - changing the definition of "recently added" to work not on mtime but whether album already exists in db? - menu item to rescan particular album or artist? - other? |

Well, in Amarok 2.3 it is possible to rescan specific folders selectively. Other than that, there are no concrete plans at this point.

You can always do a full rescan of your collection to fix this.

Thanks to markey and especially google01103. The problem regarding correct showing of ID3 tags was solved. I used EasyTag to update the "mtime" of involved folders. However, I am still not able to modify tags in Amarok (all fields are in grey) under my account. But, they can be easily modified under root. Do you have any hints how to solve this? Below is my setting.

You must have read/write permissions to edit tags. Change the permissions in your collection folders.

Hello valoriez,
why are you talking about "collection folder"? I would like to edit ID3 tag of any file for which I have edit access rights. And, as I mentioned in my previous post, I hope I have correct rights - or am I wrong? |

Sure -- but if you want to edit the tags from within Amarok, you must have the correct permissions. Most people play music from within their collections, but I guess you could navigate to and edit files outside of your collection also, if you want to. I haven't tried that.

It seems that only the parent folder can be rescanned not the individual ones witin example all my music is under MyMusic and that folder is checked as the 'collection folder' but any folder beneath is is grey'ed out and can not be rescanned, so in effect I can only rescan the entire collection to repair tags in one album |
