I have really big problem with playing mp3 in Amarok, and very like this app.
I'm almost at the end of my nerves, but can try more, to fix this, but with any more ideas. --------------------------------- My OS is Linux Kubuntu 9.10 x64 with KDE 4.3.2 --------------------------------- Done big upgrade with pulseaduio, cause for me is the best thing you could do, to have lots of tools, and sound from anywhere at the same time (with standard alsa drivers I had problems such playing youtube video with video or music player at the same time) --------------------------------- I've done this to this moment: I have installed: libxine1-ffmpeg libxine-extracodecs gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg gstreamer0.10-alsa gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly gstreamer0.10-fluendo-mp3 gstreamer0.10-esd gstreamer0.10-sdl gstreamer0.10-pulseaudio gstreamer0.10-plugins-base gstreamer0.10-plugins-good gstreamer0.10-gnonlin gstreamer0.10-x gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad gstreamer0.10-plugins-good-d gstreamer0.10-plugins-base-d gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly-db gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad-db gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly-m gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad-multiverse gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad-multiverse-dbg gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly-multiverse-dbg libgstreamer0.10-0 libgstreamer-plugins-base0.10-0 libxine1 libxinerama1 libmad0 libmad0-dev somewhere in forum I've found this package amarok-xine > i can't find it anywhere -------------------------------------- I've tried also: delete /home/user_name/.xine/catalog.cashe cause somebody said that it has xine config, so it could be the way to have new config automatically. -------------------------------------- Also tried:
have no .... idea what's the magic byte! -------------------------------------- This is the error when i want to play mp3 (But not all, some of them are playable): "demux_wavpack: (open_wv_file:127) open_wv_file: non-seekable inputs aren't supported yet." what's strange - in audacious or alsaplayer all of mp3 which are not playable in amarok, are running. -------------------------------------- What else? del everything from: /home/user_name/.kde/share/apps/amarok/ That's all Folks. Where is the catch? What's more important in this, when I go to the Amarok site, I see that they are working on ..... new look!! Please! I don't want to be annoying, but Amarok looks pretty well, and what it needs is more stability, reliability and making sure, that downloader for codec-packages works perfect, and checks that you have possibility to run mp3 - after download. Why? Well if user who have time and patience to do all the above (like I did...), have no chance to play mp3 by the app, then what's the idea of having it anyway? ps. please don't write "back to windows you jerk", cause i really like Linux for a lots of stuff, but this above - is one of the (as I call them) little-specials for the user. |

The problem lies in you using Pulseaudio and Gstreamer which are used for Gnome only in Ubuntu.
Amarok is a KDE application and uses Phonon for the sound, so you need to install the phonon-backend-xine package to listen to your music. In the SystemSettings -> Multimedia, make sure to push Pulseaudio to the bottom and choose the xine backend in the Backend tab. If you don't use Gnome, you should remove Pulseaudio and Gstreamer, since you will not use them anyway. To remove them, type
in a konsole. Then you should also remove the file $HOME/.kde/share/config/phonondevicesrc and then restart KDE. This should do the trick. FWIW, similar instructions about Phonon were given to you already about a year back in this same forum
Running Kubuntu 22.10 with Plasma 5.26.3, Frameworks 5.100.0, Qt 5.15.6, kernel 5.19.0-23 on Ryzen 5 4600H, AMD Renoir, X11
FWIW: it's always useful to state the exact Plasma version (+ distribution) when asking questions, makes it easier to help ... |

Well I'm sorry but I have to disagree.
I have standard sound emulator (called by many of people as: sound card). But it's just a multichannel module based on codec Realtek ALC888, In Linux figures as Intel ICH-9. Almost every producer of mother-boards is using it (or other module based on codec) in his product, when we're talking about the „sound card” that is integrated into mother-board. It's shouldn't be called „sound card”, but some of producers don't bother. I had an x32 version of Kubuntu for almost a year. Now have x64 version, and never-ever been so lucky to have sound after installation from all sources at one time. Sound is available, but only 1 stream at the time. I'm not the only one who has problem with that. And the pulseaudio is the only thing that saved my „3 letters”. I'm not going to rid of it, because I've tried almost any possible way to reinstall and update alsa – scripts, compiling, main alsa site etc., without a results (I was little afraid of using pulseaudio, cause didn't know much about compiling and Linux structure). But there weren't other way. After making pulseaudio workable (it wasn't easy), everything is going fine! I can even see a single sound from kopete on pulseaudio volume-control. Whats better - when I'm watching a movie with 6 channel sound, I'm able to see all of them, at the vol.-control. Even equalizer is cool. I've didn't see such tools in the Alsa (for me there was alway mixer, and... that's it). So I thought why as Kubuntu and not Ubuntu user, I can't use sound server like pulseaudio with a lots of options? But let's get to the point. You're saying that „Amarok is a KDE application and uses Phonon for the sound, so you need to install the phonon-backend-xine package to listen to your music.” That's what I don't understand, because Amarok plays some of songs, and all of the radios from cool streams. Any other application such: vlc, alsaplayer, audacious, kaffeine, etc. Have no single problem with playing sound. Why is that? And yes, I have it installed: phonon-backend-xine And second „yes”: I have at the top the xine instead of gstreamer in settings:multimedia/service tab (i have to admit, that there's nothing else to choose: only xine). I very thank You for response, and hope that there'll be more, cause i like very much Amarok, and want to use it. But is there any other way, but ridding the pulse-audio (which I'm not going to do)? ps. I've forgot to say – at the x32 architecture, also with pulseaudio, Amarok was playing everything. It just worked (without radios unfortunately, but that's the other topic I've made). |

AND NOW I'M SHOCKED!!
I know what was wrong, but never-ever thought that it would be the cause. Wandering, and wandering - I'm looking at the folders with mp3, and thinking, testing, which are running and which are not. I'm adding files from folder with normal name – they are working, adding from other they don't (checked in other player – they're working).... Get to the point: Those mp3 that were unable to be played by Amarok were in folder with # as a first character of their name. When I copied file.mp3 from “# folder” to a for example desktop it started to work in Amarok. Because I really don't have cleanest mp3 folder (it's a … mess to be honest), I had to figure out something. So I've put every mp3, and albums with mp3 to the Music folder, but I've maid also folders with # (they were always sorted to top or bottom of Music folder, and because of this easier to find), and in those I had order. Example: /Music /# chill-out /# rock /album1 /album2 /mp3_1.mp3 /mp3_2.mp3 Now can Someone explain it to me, what's wrong with the folders with # at the beginning of the name? |

No need to be SHOCKED, dude. The "Files with # in the name don't play, yadda yadda" bug is like the oldest bug in Phonon, it has only been reported about 3 Billion times. Upgrading to KDE SC 4.4 should fix this.

Well really thanks for response.
But like You see it isn't just obvious. Look at the entire post, and think what I had to do to figure it out. I really (truly really) searched network to find solution about: "why my amarok won't play mp3" and without any clue of bug/error/etc. I've been very lucky to be pointed on bug by myself. I'm getting to the point that sometimes you just have to be lucky! Really.. I could remove all of pulseaudio or gstreamer, but it wasn't the case.. But what's really bugs me - after searching a lot of forums I didn't found any of bug in phonon. What I was wrong in searching? In other words, can You specify the "string" of bug searching in google/other web searcher, that I could use and put the right string? Just for future... The topic is of course closed, but I wander, what would be the best string to search that will have best solution? /Best Regards, and thanks for help. Cheers! |

I was started by starting a topic
How could I know that is the "#" issue. I could never guess, especially that linux can have any type of character in file/folder name. /Regards |
