for no discernable reason!
I had just completed a clean rescan, 1 hour previously. I switched off monitor folders. I'm used to this happening when for whatever reason sdb1 is not plugged in, & i won't add it to fstab because i only plug it in when i'm using it, but this time i simply changed something trivial in phonon and it went for a rescan, i pressed cancel ... boom! Gone! It takes me over 2hrs to scan 1tb over usb2 why does this constantly happen? wake me up when its finished scanning. since i started using amarok at 1.something I believe it has rescanned my entire collection about 30 times! surely once is enough? amasnore 2.3.0 kde 4.3.4 |

First: please do not shout.
Then don't rescan the disk as an USB device, this is certainly a very bad idea. Mount it, add it as collection folder, that is much faster than scanning a 1TB disk as a media device. Usually, when Amarok starts and the disk is plugged in it will be mounted automatically, else make sure it is plugged in before you start. I use an external HD with my collection on it since a long time and never had the problems you encounter. But I make sure it is available, don't expect miracles.
Running Kubuntu 22.10 with Plasma 5.26.3, Frameworks 5.100.0, Qt 5.15.6, kernel 5.19.0-23 on Ryzen 5 4600H, AMD Renoir, X11
FWIW: it's always useful to state the exact Plasma version (+ distribution) when asking questions, makes it easier to help ... |

what makes you think i'm shouting .. was it the caps in the title?
I do mount it first then add it as a collection folder, as ever. It just happens to be a usb2 bus. I have no expectations of miracles, even at easter! i'm sure that i use amarok as i'm expected to, i am equally sure that changing something trivial in settings, whilst my drive is plugged in and the entire collection listed should noT trigger a complete rescaN! Which despite having a cancel button is irrevokable. Something is rotten in the state of Denarok! |

it seems that amarok will rescan the entire collection if you press apply to any change in settings, no matter if you are monitoring folders or not.

First of all calm down. Don't know which apps you're talking about, I neither know Denarok nor amasnore. And yes, UPPERCASE means shouting.
There were problems, that amarok dropped the collection, if the ext. HDD wasn't available. But these issues should be solved. Perhaps you can post your distro here and if you're using distribution packages or self-compiled. You provide infos, we try to help. You shout, we ignore you. Simple, eh. m0nk

hi monk
i assure you that i am quite calm. just trying to inject some humour into an otherwise immensely boring user experience. Denarok is word play on shakespeares famous quote from hamlet. Amasnore is word play that reflects the enormous length of time rescanning my collection takes! i've been using Debian since Hamm in 98 now I use squeeze/lenny mainly, although i allow a few multimedia apps and their respective libraries (including amarok) to be sid. as i mentioned i have been assiduously following amarok for a long time now, in fact probably since it's release into the wild, and have commented before on my experiences with it, generally good & full of admiration! ... be that as it may ... as i am aware that amarok should no longer drop the database i thought it worth mentioning that the phenomenon continues to occur. its no big deal for anyone to use updatedb/locate and the fastest lightest media player out there, then look up lyrics & wiki in a browser! i have been an amarok user for fun & frolics only. and like a loyal follower i type away here.. only to await your sullen responses ... boo. believe it or not, it is me who is trying to help you! update-alternatives --config mp3player-of-your-choice smile, it may never happen! peace & biscuits amarok 2.3.0 binary debian 2.6.32-3-686 kde 4.3.4 mysql 5.1.44-3 |

This might be related to a problem that I'm having with my laptop.
If Amarok decides to scan while my (somewhat flaky) wireless network connection happens to be down, the whole collection is gone. It happened just a couple of times when I used 1.4, but it's happened at least half a dozen times since I started to use 2.2 and later. No fun, since scanning ~55,000 songs takes a couple of hours. (Btw, giving extra weight to a single word by, for example, writing it in capitals, can hardly be considered as shouting. There's no point in being overly sensitive). |

My advice is to only use wireless when absolutely necessary. That'll solve your problem right there.

I will take your suggestion as a joke - otherwise I might be a bit **** off. 1) Of course, it's necessary. I use wires wherever i can, but it's almost impossible to pull a network cable to the little table next to my bed on the second floor. 2) As I said, the problem has become much worse since I began to use 2.2 and later. Of course, some of the problem may be related to my distro (Mandriva 2010.0), but I'm also fairly sure that part of the problem is the way Amarok "reacts" when it suddenly finds an empty collection where there used to be one. 1.4 seems to have handled this much better. |
