pebmich-comcast, I had the same problems you had. Try installing the Kubuntu restricted extras package. That plus libxine1-ffmpeg and phonon-backend-xine package did it for me.

Searching for kubuntu restricted extras in the software center is probably the easiest way, but you can also use the console
