Hello guys - and girls, I know a little about Linux but not an expert. I have been using Ubuntu more frequently lately and decided to try Amarok but the songs will not play, there is no sound and amarok flies threw the play list like it doesn't even try to play the song.
I was looking in the settings for sound devices and I can test them all and the works but when I go to play the file it doesn't. When I first started amarok I got the error that one sound device did not work so it was switching to an other. But now when I start I do not get that error so I can not say exactly what it said. I am running Ubuntu 10.04 64bit and armarok 2.3.0 after typing this I wounder if it is a codec issue? I didn't notice any errors while installing armarok, installed seeing apt-get |

From your description this is a codec issue, please install the codecs, Ubuntu doesn't ship those by default for legal reasons, and we can't do anything on Amarok's side to trigger a download.
For the Xine backend you need libxine1-ffmpeg, for gstreamer the various gstreamer codecs. We recommend to use the xine backend which gives better results.

FWIW: it's always useful to state the exact Plasma version (+ distribution) when asking questions, makes it easier to help ... |

That makes scene, I was looking on the net and found where one person mentioned to do a check for xine. But when I typed %xine-check it returned with a bash error so I guess I would have to start by installing Xine? I am not really sure what it is, does that install the codec's?

To check which backend you use, go to the Amarok settings dialog -> Playback and click on the "Configure Phonon" button. There you go to the backend tab to see which one is installed. If xine is not listed there, just install the phonon-backend-xine package, then change the backend once it is installed.

awesome, I happened to find a post on the Ubuntu forums that stated xine package was moved so I used this instead: sudo apt-get install xine-ui libxine1-ffmpeg

Well, xine-ui has nothing to do with the backend, you only need the codec package and the backend package, as suggested in my earlier post. And nothing was moved in the repositories AFAICT.

Yeah, I didn't see that second post. Amarok shows xine is being used as the backend I have apt-get removed the xine-ui and libxine1-ffmpeg. I was getting it to play correctly in Amarok but I then could not get sound from anything else like my browser. Once I rebooted I am not getting sound from Amarok or my browser still but I do get sound when I test the sound devices in Amarok.
I admit I am completely baffled and lost Also is there a way to search network drives within Amarok? I have all my music on an other Ubuntu server. |

You undid a little too much. You still need the libxine1-ffmpeg package.
I feel more like I do now than I did when I got here.

My problem is the same, no sound but amarok plays. Pulse audio, streamer were removed and libxine1-ffmpeg and phonon-backend-xine were installed. the xine backend was selected, but still no sound comes out even though program goes through the motions of playing.
Can it be there is a volume control switch in the system that is muting the whole system? Also, when you talk about codecs and examining settings, what are you really saying? The system gave me a code 11 segmentation fault tonight, the first since lucid was installed on my computer. No bug report was turned in. |

Please check that no channels are muted or set to 0% in KMix, eventually install alsamixer which is a Konsole tool to check if there is something else muted.

kmix and alsamixer both code 11 crashes. Both packages have been removed and re-installed to no avail.
I have 18 pages of bug printouts for kmix --- do you want them? Nether package could be configured...what do we do now? I run ubuntu lucid, amarok 2.3.0 KDE 4.4.2. I do not run Kubuntu. What volume control switch will mute-unmute the system? This is the same one that is located at the very top of the screen. I need to find and re-install it. It did not come with lucid when I installed it. IMHO there is a single switch controlling the whole system but I haven't found it yet... |

Thanks for the information Mamarok.
I installed the libxine1-ffmpeg package with KPackageKit, and now Amarok works excellent. |

Mamarok, I followed Kelvin168's lead and installed libxine1-ffmpeg with KPackageKit but, still, no joy.
What am I doing wrong? This computer is dual-booted with Windows 7 ... Nexus radio and Winamp both work on this connection, so, again, what am I doing wrong? |

Can I try this procedure with Fedora, only use yum instead of apt-get?
