This sort of dynamic playlist should be easy...?

Hello,

I am trying to create a dynamic playlist of artists that I like to listen to. There are quite a number, and I have between 1 and 40 songs for each of them.

What I want is to create a dynamic playlist that gives each song an equal chance of being played. E.g. there is a 40-times greater chance of getting a song, any song, from a band with 40 songs than a band with 1 song.

One way of doing this might be to create a dynamic playlist with proportional bias and the % for each artist set to the number of their songs I have. But this seems absurdly slow and long winded... How else can I do this?

Many thanks for any help you can offer!

You should have a look at the Automated Playlist Generator in Amarok 2.3.1, that might answer your question.

Running Kubuntu 22.10 with Plasma 5.26.3, Frameworks 5.100.0, Qt 5.15.6, kernel 5.19.0-23 on Ryzen 5 4600H, AMD Renoir, X11
FWIW: it's always useful to state the exact Plasma version (+ distribution) when asking questions, makes it easier to help ...

OK thanks, I'll look into upgrading (I just have 2.3.0 installed from the 10.04 ubuntu repositories right now) :)

Have a look at http://kubuntu.org/news for newer packages of Amarok.

Thinking about it, another approach that may work is to add a comment "lyrical" to all of the files of each artist I want in the playlist, then to generate a playlist with 100% matching the comment "lyrical". Not robust if I get more music, but maybe is a way of doing it with 2.3.1?

Why adding a comment if you can use labels? You can then generate a label specific playlist with the Automated Playlist Generator.

I know and didn't mean to imply your suggestion was not sufficient, 'tis just an alternate option for people who don't want to upgrade :)

Well, 2.3.1 is the latest stable version and allows the use of labels and the APG.

Of course you are free to look for workarounds instead of upgrading, although it is not really a logical move.
