I have seen a couple of topics about this but one that mentioned things close to my error did not help me fix it.
Btw here is the important info:
I am using amarok 2.3 with Mint8 KDE 4.4.2

Amarok has worked great for me, but I did a stupid thing and tried to install Sound-Juicer so I could rip CD's (didn't like K3b, and before I found out about Audex). Anyway Sound-Juicer pulled in some dependencies that I was afraid would mess up things but I did it anyway since I had used the program before successfully.

However now it seems to have messed with Amarok since I had no sound in Amarok after installing Sound-Juicer. I tried switching from Xine to Gstreamer since it said my HDA Nvidia sound wasn't working.

I guess if someone knows how to get rid of the dependencies that Sound-Juicer installed that should fix my situation. I should have wrote them down.
Below is the KCrash output from Console when I try to run amarok.
Code: Select all
KCrash: Application 'amarok' crashing...
sock_file=/home/wayne/.kde/socket-wayne-desktop/kdeinit4__0
<unknown program name>(3637)/: Communication problem with  "amarok" , it probably crashed.
Error message was:  "org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown" : " "The name org.kde.amarok was not provided by any .service files" "

Thanks

I've used SoundJuicer when Audex wouldn't work for me, and it never messed anything up, so I don't think that is the problem. Gstreamer is the least good of the choices for a backend; please test all your listed sound devices in System Settings > Multimedia > Phonon > Device Preference with both backends, and choose the one you want after testing.

Does that help?

Maybe its the PulseAudio? I didn't have it installed before and I think Sound Juicer installed it. It keeps defering to the Pulse Audio saying the HDA one won't work.
Everytime I test it simply switches to the Pulse Audio one.

Well, if you think it's PA, then uninstall it.

Personally, I just re-installed PA because it helps sound keep working properly in Amarok, flash apps such as YouTube, and other places. However, many folks DO have problems caused by or associated with pulseaudio, and for those people, unless it is *required* by their systems, it's better removed.

By the way, Kaudiocreator is sort of back, and works for me. http://linuxgrandma.blogspot.com/2010/0 ... -kde4.html

Actually I came across your post about KAudioCreator in my searches about a ripper, knew it was back, but have found Audex is a little bit better (based on Kaudio) since it can do Cover Art, but that part doesn't seem to work for me (go figure)

As far as whether its PA or not, I'm now unsure. I have had Knotify crash a few times and Amarok still won't open, crashes immediately. I'm really unsure what is at fault. I did try deleting the config folder for Amarok with no luck.
I'm back to Songbird for now.

Thanks

I solved this problem last night on a netbook. It turned out to be a xine-lib plugin. May not help you, but you can try this anyways.

Navigate to /usr/lib/xine/ and rename the plugins folder to something else (eg, notplugins).

Now try to start amarok. If it works, you can create a new plugins folder and start copying in files from the one you renamed until you find the offending file(s). Delete it/them and continue :)

Ok now I feel like a fool. When I was first instructed to go into Multimedia and try out things there, I should have tried to switch the back end from Gstreamer to Xine as that was the problem. Gstreamer was messing it up.

Amarok is back.
