I am having a problem playing music files from a network share. I keep all my music on a windows home server that all my computers can access but for some reason amarock will not play the files, It sees them just does'nt play them. It seems like it trys. Rhythmbox can play the files but I'm more interested in Amarock.Image

If you copy them locally do they play? They can only play if you have the appropriate codecs installed for the files you have. Due to legal restrictions, distributions ( such as Mint ) can't include them for formats such as MP3. Your distribution community should have information on how to install this.

Otherwise, how have you mounted your network share? Is it mounted into the file system?

What type of files are these? If they are mp3 files, have you installed the codecs necessary? Which codec package(s) you need depends on 1. your distribution, and 2. the backend to phonon you're using - xine, gstreamer or vlc. You should find what you need here:

http://amarok.kde.org/wiki/FAQ#What_med ... support.3F

You can find the backend(s) to test here: Settings > Configure Amarok > Playback > Configure Phonon. The two important bits here are the backend tab, where you can choose which of the backends you want, and the Test button, where you can move up and down the devices you have available to you. If you can get no sound from any mix of devices and backends, and if you are using Kubuntu or Ubuntu 10.10, you have Pulseaudio installed, and may need to use the package pavucontrol to configure Pulseaudio. Hopefully you will need to do that only once.

Sorry to give out so much information, but you didn't provide us with much info to go on.

Ok, a little more info here. Thanks for all the support, I've only been using Linux for a little more than a year now so I'm still learning. I'm using Linux Mint 10 so it's based on Ubuntu 10.10 The files I am trying to play are mp3 and they do not play if I copy them locally so I assume that the correct codec(s) are probably not installed. I assumed that since Rythymnbox played them the capability was there.

As for how my share is mounted, I'm not exactly sure, it just showed up in Amarok and Rythymnbox I did nothing to manually mount it.

The backend i'm using is Xine and I do get sound when I press the test button for pulse audio.

Thanks again for the support!

I installed libxine1-ffmpeg and it is now playing my files. Thanks for the info!
