My Amarok skips intros

Sun Dec 05, 2010 11:17 pm
I word my subject heading like this because many people read my thread in the Ubuntu and Mint forums without seemingly having a similar issue or comment, so I'm thinking I must be doing something wrong myself.

I'll import my music from home/music into Amarok, add some choices to the playlist side and start a song. At the end of the song the progress slider kind of judders, goes back an inch and then the next song will start about three seconds into the song. This has been the case with Kubuntu and Mint KDE, the last two versions of both, on three different computers (though two have the same chipset but different processors and ram). Sometimes the apparent glitch doesn't occur. Once it starts to, it always seems to do it.

My desktop PC now has Windows 7 only, but my laptop has Linux Mint KDE 9 after two months of trying Fedora, Suze, Kubuntu and Mint KDE versions and two years of Gnome and Xfce. The laptop is a Toshiba Equium L40, 120gb hd, 2gb ddr2, 1.6 dual core, intel 945 graphics.

Am I importing my music wrongly? In System monitor, ram is seldom used above 300mb, and cpu is quite low for most tasks, 5 to 30 %.

Thanks.

This sounds like a phonon bug. What happens when you play the same tracks in a non-phonon player? Some you can try are VLC (standalone), mplayer, or Kaffeine.

Please file a bug against phonon if your results indicate that's the problem.

To possibly make things better in Amarok, you can try a different backend for phonon. Since you don't indicate which you are using, I'll guess it's xine. Phonon-vlc and phonon-gstreamer are both available also, and might work better for you.

Also, it would be really helpful if you could tell us the exact Amarok and KDE version you are using, you can see both in the About dialog of Amarok.

Running Kubuntu 22.10 with Plasma 5.26.3, Frameworks 5.100.0, Qt 5.15.6, kernel 5.19.0-23 on Ryzen 5 4600H, AMD Renoir, X11
FWIW: it's always useful to state the exact Plasma version (+ distribution) when asking questions, makes it easier to help ...

Phonon-gstreamer has solved this problem for me, replacing xine, the vlc one doesn't seem to be in the Mint repository.

This is Amarok 2.3.0 and Kde 4.4.5.

I have had some dealings with Launchpad bug-reporting in the past but I am quite quickly at sea with much of how the technical people deal with issues - perhaps my posting here is still of some use.

Thanks.

Ah, 2.3.0 is rather old; current is 2.3.2, and 2.4 beta will be out in days.

That said, xine seems to be on the way, with Gstreamer and VLC fighting for first place as the phonon-backend-of-choice. VLC is the clear winner in the eyes of the Amarok developers, but I'm glad gstreamer is working for you now.

Actually this doesn't seem resolved after all. Amarok brings up a box saying Phonon claims it can't play mp3's. This does turn out to be untrue though.

I'd like to try the vlc backend, I already use vlc for video, but the backend isn't in the ubuntu repositary and I have no idea about compiling, I'm useless unless it's a .deb or in a repositary. This is also why I don't have the most current Amarok.

At the moment I've reverted to Exaile, really an Xfce player, but I'd prefer Amarok because I like the unified KDE look.

Any further ideas appreciated, including how I might obtain the vlc backend or update Amarok.

Thanks.

Phonon-backend-vlc is in the repositories, as is phonon-backend-gstreamer.
