Amarok with phonon-vlc enabled ran with around 6% CPU. I've now disabled folder watching and CPU time raised up to 75%, even while idle and I've I/O activity on the ext. HDD.

tried restarting Amarok? you re-enable collection watch and cpu and i/o activity goes down?

Just an update. Amarok from today's GIT now uses around 7% with vlc backend, but the dropouts are still here. Collection scanner is disabled, therefore the issue must be something different.
