There is something very weird that has happened with some of my files --- 4, specifically --- in Amarok since version 2 was out. I never understood this and yes, I should've asked before, but now it happened to a lot of other files, so I got kind of really curious about this one.

I have four mp3s:

Secret Smile (by Semisonic)
Sky featuring Ingrid Michaelson (by Joshua Radin)
Your Latest Trick (by Dire Straits)
The Fight Song (by The Republic Tigers)

In their tags, the *only* fields filled are the Artist and Title. Nothing else; yet, they appear under Various Artists, together, under the same album.

Even more mysteriously, tonight all the Glee Cast songs I have, which are also only tagged with "Glee Cast" as the artist and with their titles, moved away from "Glee Cast" artist to "Various Artists". However, they are in a different "Unknown album", not the one including the other 4 songs.

Could anybody help me out?

What separates Various Artists albums and tracks and albums sorted under their artists is the Album Artist tag. When you click "Show under Various Artists" in the context (right-click) menu, that tag will be emptied if it is filled, and the opposite happens to a file in VA when you "Do not show under VA", only the AA tag will be auto-filled from the Artist tag.

If there is no Album tag filled in, and no AA tag filled in, Amarok will put the track into Unknown Album in VA. If you want them sorted otherwise, tag them the way you want them sorted. If you don't know some of the information, try out the new MusicBrainz function in the tag editor, or use Picard if you have a lot of tracks to tag. EasyTag, Puddletag and Kid3 are other favorite taggers.
