How are remote collections in the context of a home network meant to be access'ed ?

The Wiki recommends the ever faithful Samba, but this is prone to deleting all ratings, tags and so on (viewtopic.php?f=116&t=94104&p=191537) in the event of a network problem (or just taking your laptop on holiday).
