PC: HP Pavilion g7-1070us
Kubuntu 11.04 (2.6.38-11-generic x86_64 (64 bit)) KDE 4.7.00 Amarok 2.4.3 And still Amarok will not 'see' the audio CD. Insert an audio CD and the drive 'wakes up' and the Device Notifier offers the choices, of which "Play Audio CD with Amarok" is one, and when selected launches Amarok, but the audio CD is not loaded, nor is it identified in Local. This has been a continuing issue with Amarok for years now. WHY IS THIS STILL AN (UNRESOLVED) ISSUE!? According the to the current Amarok FAQ:
All I want is to be able to play my audio CDs when inserted and Amarok is selected. Why doesn't this 'just work'?

is settings -> configure amarok -> plugins -> audiocd collection checked?

Yes. Interestingly (and what I'm going to state I've seen and been through before), if Amarok is launched first, and I then load an audio CD, ignoring the Device Notifier when it pops open, then (at least on this occasion) clicking on Local Music shows Audo CD with the number of tracks, the Album Title, date of the album, and the listed tracks and track names. This is what I expect if I opt to launch Amarok via the Device Notifier option, but what does not happen. Again, why?

There's a known bug that the CD detection doesn't fire correctly if Amarok is started and the CD is already present. You need to insert the CD after Amarok is running for it to work (just opening and closing the CD tray is sufficient).
Nobody's been able to track it down yet, and I don't think it directly affects any of the core devs (nobody really plays audio CDs) so it's not been a high priority. |

Really? Nobody? I don't believe I'm a 'nobody', and I'm not the only one. Many users of Amarok have been complaining for years, ever since the abandonment of version 1.4, asking why it doesn't properly detect and play audio CD's, when it used to do so. Audio CDs are not a thing of the past - they are still manufactured, and many people buy and play them. The developers of Amarok make it a point to promote Amarok as 'the application' for all your music needs.
Not so here. Insert audio CD. Select Play Audio CD with Amarok from the Device Notifier pop-up, launching Amarok. Eject CD and reinsert. Amarok does not detect it. I have to launch Amarok first, then load an audio CD, let it be read, and then Amarok will identify it, as previously stated. Not a high priority of the devs I will have to accept, and believe as a result that the problem will never be isolated or fixed. That's a shame. I would like to use Amarok, but not if it won't behave properly with audio CDs. Other applications - VLC, Bangarang, and others - work with audio CDs just fine. Amarok wants to be the 'leader of the pack' but chooses to ignore what is still a significant segment of the audiophile users out there.

I said "of the core devs". We welcome any contributions people can make, but it's a small team with limited spare time, and there's only so much people have time for.
I've just tested this exact procedure - with Amarok not running, insert audio CD, click "Play Audio CD with Amarok", wait for Amarok to start, open CD tray, close CD tray - and the audio CD is detected. I am running the latest development version, so this may have changed, though I don't believe there's been work on the audio CD handling. |

Yes, you did cite it in context of the 'devs', so I apologize for my comment. 'development version', meaning not the version available in the Ubuntu repositories?

The version in the standard Ubuntu 11.04 repositories is 2.4. The Kubuntu backports PPA contains 2.4.3, the latest release version (the version you're running).
The current development state of the software is contained in a Git repository here. I build Amarok locally from this. This is not release-quality software, but is available for testers and developers. |

Having a similar issue here with Amarok 2,4,3, KDE 4.7.2 and Arch Linux. The CD tracks show up in the left pane but won't play. Any ideas?

Have you tried launching Amarok from the console, and seeing what the output is when you try to play the CD?

I figured out the issue: install phonon-vlc. Amarok doesn't seem to like gstreamer. Everything works better, streaming radio included.

09/06/2012 - 11.02 And Amarok after 4 Years continue to be the "Best Audio Player in the Univers" but still NOT Play a Simple Audio CD (Original and buyed on Amazon). Our Heroes have Two Choise :
1- Simple Change the Audio Player and choice a more "Modest Player" 2- Work with the Team of Amarok Developers to resolve this Huge Problem ( so huge that nobody can solve in this Univers!!! ) |

Music CDs do play in Amarok from GIT, so I expect it works in the beta released now. We're due to release soon: http://amarok.kde.org/en/releases/2.6/beta/1. Help test if you like!

Also, playing music CDs is so totally old-school, and you can archive a CD on a computer. Rip your CDs so you have the collection all in the same place instead of having to change CDs.
Most people don't even buy CDs anymore...
Running Kubuntu 22.10 with Plasma 5.26.3, Frameworks 5.100.0, Qt 5.15.6, kernel 5.19.0-23 on Ryzen 5 4600H, AMD Renoir, X11
FWIW: it's always useful to state the exact Plasma version (+ distribution) when asking questions, makes it easier to help ... |
