This seems like a dead horse that keeps coming back to life but here we go:

Amarok 2.7.1
KDE 4.10.4
Fedora 18
phonon-backend-vlc 0.6.2-1.fc18
vlc-core 2.0.7-1.fc18
flac files

amarok does not honour the replaygain tags(as applied vi metaflac) . yes it is checked on in amarok .
I loaded music player 'Quod Libet 2.5.1' and it honour's the tags from the same flac file .

Am I missing something here ? Is there some other button to push ?

I installed rhythmbox and it works there as well .

It's possible that Replay Gain does not work correctly with Phonon-VLC. Please try with Phonon-GStreamer.

Well there seems to be something to this (I think it works with the gstreamer back end) . What I dont understand is how the other 2 players worked ?

Rythmbox and Quod Libet are both GTK based and don't use Phonon at all as it is a KDE specific sound framework. You are comparing apples with oranges here.
