Somebody has got to be able to answer this. I've pretty much figured out this isnot possible in KDE. But why is it not possible?

i am guessing that you want this so that file show up in the correct order (eg 9.ogg before 10.ogg). i dont have a solution but just want to point out that the mac os x finder would put 9.ogg before 10.ogg in a view sorted by file name. this seems to me a better solution, that file browsers and the ls command have an option for clever sorting. actually maybe they do. i dont know.

um, amarok sorts track numbers correctly IIRC. obviously its not going to sort filenames 'correctly' if you don't have a leading 0. I sometimes run krename a couple of times to add the needed zeros.
