Why in the world would you *EVER* "recode" (I assume you mean transcode) your MP3 (read lossy) files?!

I like amarok alot, but Im having this same problem, its really frustraiting!!!

I upgraded from Ubuntu Breezy to Dapper, and now everything is fu*** up.  I cant se my videos and use Amarok...
Maybe the problem is because of the upgrade (Dapper not been officially out), but still, the Amarok should work fine,
i download it from the Amarok repository.

just upgraded from 1.4beta3 to 1.4final, but now amarok empties my database (mysql) and rescans my collection at startup

edit:
after restoring the db (from my backups ), everything seems to work fine..

gstreamer was dropped because nobody was able to maintain it.  It would be worse if you were able to use a half assed implementation which crashed every ten minutes.

recoding is gone because it limits the usage of id3v1. id3v1 is ****, introduces many bugs and provides no advantage over id3v2.
