I'm assuming that the star rating in amarok and the star rating in my Ipod are not the same. is this correct? and if so is there any way to have amarok interact with my ipod's rating?

There is absolutely no way (yet) for amarok to read itunes rating, because this rating is not contained in the music files.
This information is stored in the itunes library file.
Amarok does the same : ratings are stored in the database, not in the music file.

It makes sense, especially when you consider a shared music library ...
