Amarok slow on transferring to media device

I notice the following behaviour in Amarok (Amarok 1.4.3 on KDE 3.5.2 - Ubuntu 6.10):
When transferring many (more than 1000) mp3 files to a generic media device, the transfer speed is extremely slow. It takes about 30 to 40 seconds to process a song. But as the copy progresses, and there are less files in the queue does the transfer speed up to normal speed.

I have tried to copy a single album (10 songs, 60 MB) to the media device via Amarok. This goes OK. I then tried to copie 100 files. Speed was acceptable. I then tried 500 files. This is very slow.

I believe that Amarok is trying to reread the mp3 tags of the files in the transfer queue after each write, though I do not have any evidence. Does anyone have a way to speed up the transfer of large amounts of files to a media device via Amarok?
