Just a few hours ago I found out that Zune is partially compatible with the libmtp library amarok also uses.
Check the article here: http://www.zune-online.com/news/zune/zune-on-mac-os-x-and-linux.html Is the developer's team interested in adding Zune support in Amarok? |

I have a feeling that there are far more useful features to add.

We are a step further than the media's negative reviews about Microsoft (yes most of the time are about Microsoft, not Zune!). The Zune Software installs without problems. The Wifi is not so useful currently. But when you look at a 11 months project like Zune, you look at the potential not the product itself. And if it means anything to you, easy firmware updates are a main concern of the Zune project.
In any case I don't represent Microsoft here. I just run a Zune fan site. And the article on the site "I am advertising" has a direct link to the amarok project. |

Maybe i'm just weird but,
ipod first generation came out... a bunch of years ago and had less problems than zune does now. That doesn't spell much good. |

if someone who has a zune would care to work on a media device plugin, I'm sure it would be a useful addition. Amarok has support for a lot of media devices - the wider the coverage, the better for everyone

Thats the spirit I expect from an open source project. Do it all - support it all. Personally I can help partially on debugging using amarok with my Zune player but of course I can promote this using my website which is more useful I think. |

It seems that the Zune speaks a form of MTP so the best route is to get libmtp support for the Zune. That way Amarok will be able to use the existing MTP device plugin. This article implies that you should be able to see a track listing from the Zune with Amarok but not copy any files to/from it. There seems to be some kind of authentication needed to fool the Zune into thinking you are the Zune software:

This makes sense! zuneonline, might be worth your while contacting the libmtp devs and offering testing support there - since amarok uses libmtp for its mtp support, if these libs can be made to properly support the zune, then there's probably no further work needed to be done on amarok.

Thought this might be of interest here:

You can also find some photos from a Mac iBook connected to Zune on my site here:
http://www.zune-online.com/news/zune/photos-with-zune-on-a-mac-ibook.html Also if anyone has photos or screenshots with Zune on Linux (amarok or others) I would be happy to publish these also. Just PM me. |
