I know that we already have Magnatune and now in Amarok 2 we will have also MP3tunes-Locker, Shoutcast, and Jamendo, which will have a built in interface with Amarok 2, but Amazon now has a DRM free MP3 store which, according to many, will be the first store to really be able to challenge iTMS. It has some major artists and labels, and, it is 100% (or claims to be) DRM free. I know we have Magnatune, but the selection there is very limited, especially when compared to Amazon's new service and iTunes.

There are also 2 other services that might be interesting: Imeem (more like a Youtube for songs than an actual downloads place) and Spiralfrog(free, ad supported, but with DRM...might be Windows only...).

I just found these on the slashdot post for the Amazon store, so I thought I might post them too

I was just looking at music services, and I got some interesting ideas...

In the Wikipedia/Lyrics/... area, wouldn't it be a good idea also to find music videos? I'm not sure where would be a good source, (not sure about youtube...) but maybe someone else has an idea...

Also, there are two services
Deezer- http://www.deezer.com/
  and
SeeqPod- http://www.seeqpod.com/
which seem interesting... but I haven't had the time to look at them more, and I'm too tired to understand what they are (no sleep for 20 hours, what do you expect?)
--------
Also, a friend of mine once told me of some Anywhere.FM service, but I, from what I remember, think that it is just the same thing as MP3tunes...

A few more possible ideas for possible integration:
eMusic(http://www.emusic.com/)
Yahoo! Music (http://music.yahoo.com/)
Ninjam(http://ninjam.com/samples.php)
WebJay (??Closed??-)--- Is this similar to Last.FM?
CDBaby(http://cdbaby.com/)
Birdman Records (http://www.birdmanrecords.com/)
Beggars Group (http://beggarsgroupusa.com/store/)
Bitmunk (http://www.bitmunk.com/)

There are many sites for Indi music found here
http://wiki.monkeyfilter.com/index.php?title=MP3_Blog_Listing
Maybe there are some big sites there that might be interesting... I don't know... I will take a look at these over my vacation to see if there is anything big and interesting...

I will come back and look at these more when I have gotten some sleep...

Also, if we are into the integration of internet services, has anyone taken a look at Songbird? A big part of it is based around its Mozilla based web engine...
-----It has an interesting feature called MP3 Blogs, where when you go on a page, it scans all links for MP3 files...
------

Sorry for using up your time... just some user that wants to help...
If there is any way I can help (I know some, relatively basic C, but not enough for really coding anything useful, a little bit of most major web technologies... I know my way around Linux/KDE...) just tell me!

---Also, sorry, but does anyone know if CD burning and ripping will be integrated into Amarok 2? A plugin? Does it exist in 1.4? Sorry for going off topic

I think that amazonmp3 integration would be a great idea, since it has a much larger selection than magnatune.

Is Amazon open to third party clients though? Are there existing implementations?

depends. does amazon support artists, or does amazon support the big record labels? in the latter case, don't include it!!

we need stuff that supports the artists, not big record labels that make a whole lot of money with it! like magnatune (thanks for including that one, even though i prefer buying real cds ;)) don't support the big labels.

also, cd ripping would be really helpful.

The only existing implementation thus far is their own album downloader, however im sure that someone could shoot them an email and see if third party extension are a possibility...

I think they are probably not open to having third party clients handle any part of the transaction, but they seem to have some kind of referral program, so it may be possible to display an artist, album or track with a 'buy the mp3' or 'buy the CD' link (something like Last FM does) and if the user clicks on that and it results in a purchase Amarok could be credited for the referral.

Don't know how the referral program works, so I can't say how much sense it really makes to implement in Amarok, there is a script that will interact with Last FM to show you albums you don't have for the artist that is currently playing so there is certainly some possibilities, but whether the pay off is worth the effort is another question.

If we were to integrate such a service (which we would generally be happy to do), we would like to strike a deal with Amazon so that the Amarok project receives a certain percentage of the revenue as compensation.

Hey,

I'm a user and fan of Amarok, and I just had this idea today when browsing the web.  I joined this forum to support this idea.  The idea of amazon store integration would really be a fantastic thing.  It would provide a dramatic boost to the level of functionality of Amarok.

I am very much just an end user, I have no coding skill.  However, as a user of Amarok, anything that I could do to help this happen, I would.  Perhaps a petition, perhaps some communication with Amazon.  If I can be of any use, please, let me know!  Email papatrpt89 *at* gmail *dot* com
