Feature Request : Mono Playback

Thu Jun 05, 2008 8:07 pm
Hello, I use amarok from work, and I think it's great.  However, I can only use a single ear plug so that I can keep an ear open.  This means at any given time I can only listen to either the left or right channel of my music which is mostly stereo.

My request, is that there be an option in the playback section of amarok to force mono playblack.  I'm not sure if this is doable outside of amarok,  I searched online but wasn't able to find anything to help me with this.

Launch kmix (or whatever mixer you have) and set the balance to whichever side you want! It's along the bottom.

Cheers!

While I appreciate the response, all this will do is cause me to lose which ever channel I move the balance away from.  The purpose of mono is to mix all channels and play them back through all output.   If there is some other way of accomplishing this without adding this feature to amarok, I'm all ears.

Thanks again!

Eek! I forgot about that! For my SB Live, in Switches, there's a "Mono mix", is that useful? I've never tried it. But it makes sense...

My volume controls via gnome didn't have a switch.  However, I looked a little into
amixer manpages and found this.

dex@mybox:~$ amixer scontrols
Simple mixer control 'Master',0
Simple mixer control 'Headphone',0
Simple mixer control 'PCM',0
Simple mixer control 'Front',0
Simple mixer control 'Front Mic',0
Simple mixer control 'Front Mic Boost',0
Simple mixer control 'CD',0
Simple mixer control 'Mic',0
Simple mixer control 'Mic Boost',0
Simple mixer control 'IEC958',0
Simple mixer control 'IEC958 Playback Source',0
Simple mixer control 'Mono',0
Simple mixer control 'Capture',0
Simple mixer control 'Capture',1
Simple mixer control 'Input Source',0
Simple mixer control 'Input Source',1

dex@mybox:~$ amixer sset Mono on
Simple mixer control 'Mono',0
  Capabilities: pvolume pvolume-joined pswitch pswitch-joined
  Playback channels: Mono
  Limits: Playback 0 - 31
  Mono: Playback 0 [0%] [-4.50dB] [on]

dex@mybox:~$ amixer sset Mono 28
Simple mixer control 'Mono',0
  Capabilities: pvolume pvolume-joined pswitch pswitch-joined
  Playback channels: Mono
  Limits: Playback 0 - 31
  Mono: Playback 28 [90%] [-4.50dB] [on]

dex@mybox:~$ amixer sget Master
Simple mixer control 'Master',0
  Capabilities: pvolume pvolume-joined pswitch pswitch-joined
  Playback channels: Mono
  Limits: Playback 0 - 39
  Mono: Playback 39 [100%] [0.00dB] [on]

-----

In amarok -> Settings -> Configure Amarok... -> Engine
I am using Xine Engine, with no other choices available
Output plugin is set to "alsa"

ALSA device configuration is :
Mono : default
Stereo : default
4 Channels : plug:surround40:0
6 Channels : plug:surround51:0

Speaker Arrangement : Mono 1.0

Even with all of this set, I still cannot hear anything with sound on the left audio track.

What if you leave Amarok set to two speakers, and only use the mixer to set the balance?
