No sound, that sucks!
What distro do you use? The basic rigamarole is to switch to Phonon-Xine as your sound backend. Install it and use the sound section of systemsettings to switch. As far as the "ghost" I have no idea what you're talking about! Can you make a screenshot?

Try installing "libxine1-ffmpeg".

Do you have MP3 support for Xine?
The ghost issue is something with your window manager I guess. No idea what thats about.

Yes I do When I play mp3, flac (wav also but I have to double check that) I have no sound. This is for both Dragon Player & Amarok If I am correct those are the two players using Phono Playing mp3 or flac on Rythmbox or VLC (using ALSA) everthing is fine But I dont want to use Rythmbox....me want Amarok As fo the 'ghost screen', should I make a bug out of this....?? for sound try sudo apt-get remove phonon-backend-xine && sudo apt-get install phonon-backend-gstreamer this gave me sound . Ubuntu intrepid 8.10
I know the desired backend is xine but this seems broken atm . |

Also, you may need to make sure your xine version is NOT 1.1.16 - 1.1.15 is ok.
