The system is

Opensuse 11.2
2.6.31.5-0.1-desktop
amarok-2.1.1-7.6.i586

With amarok-1.4.10-103.pm.107.42 (Opensuse 11.1) the mp3-file below has no problems, the cover, title, artist, etc are shown, while I see with Amarok 2 "??????" and _no_ cover, which is in the mp3-file itself.

I assume there is a connection to this:

man lame:
Lame will smartly choose which tags to use. It will add ID3 v2 tags only if
the input comments won't fit in v1 or v1.1 tags, i.e. if they are more than 30 characters. In this case, both v1 and v2 tags will be added, to ensure reading of tags by MP3 players which are unable to read ID3 v2 tags.

I strongly suggest you upgrade to Amarok 2.2.1, out since a few days, this should solve most of these problems, Amarok 2.1.1 is rather obsolete now.

Running Kubuntu 22.10 with Plasma 5.26.3, Frameworks 5.100.0, Qt 5.15.6, kernel 5.19.0-23 on Ryzen 5 4600H, AMD Renoir, X11
FWIW: it's always useful to state the exact Plasma version (+ distribution) when asking questions, makes it easier to help ...

Hmmh, Opensuse 11.2 is brandnew and has a lot of bugs as always, when a distri is published. So how can I upgrad amarok _only_ from a repo to have automatic updates? Is there a repo for Amarok 2.2 for Opensuse 11.2? I don't want to upgrade to a newer KDE-version, because I fear it gets unstable.

use http://software.opensuse.org/search to find it and do 1-click install

If I do a 1-click-install from "factory" I assume a lot of factory-packages will be needed and I can't use "zypper up" to get amarok updates except I add the factory repo. All in all this means to get an unstable system. I think the better way is to wait and use Amarok 1 with Opensuse 11.1 the next time.

I posted this thread to inform about the problem.

might be problem with amarok 2.2.1 and your kde4.3.1 which like amarok is old, then again maybe the rpm will be updated to 2.2.1 soon

std kde4 is now 4.3.3 which is in either the factory or kde43 repos, you should consider upgrading
see announcement http://www.kde.org/announcements/announce-4.3.3.php

it's mostly a bug fix release

The problem exists with amarok-2.2.1-39.1.i586 too. Can this thread be forwarded as bugreport or do I have to write one? If so, where is the right place?

Very strange, the mentioned song above is now (after a cold start) displayed correctly, but the embedded cover is not displayed- I have still other songs with "????????", e.g.

You need two things:
Use UTF-8 or UF-16 on all the system and avoid iso-8660 encoding, it's old and totally obsolete. Display problems are often due to wrong encodings, especially music from various sources doesn't always have the correct character encodings.

On Amarok 2.2.1, do a full rescan of your collection, then restart Amarok.

I use UTF-8 since years, it is a full new scan and it is ID3 v2.4, which is the only version which supports UTF-8. It was encoded with lame 3.97 using a wav-file from the original cd.

Did you do a full rescan, then restart Amarok? There is an option for enabling character set detection in the id3 tags, try without first, if this doesn't work, do it again with the detection enabled. You absolutely need to restart Amarok after the scan to see the results.

I did a fresh install of the whole system. After I changed from Amarok 2.1 to Amarok 2.2 I did a full rescan, but did not start Amaork again. All my mp3s are created with the same script. A lot of files with Greek characters (UTF-8) work fine. Everything is default till now. I will search / try this "character set option", when amarok_afttagger is finished. With the 2nd file I mentioned, there was a freh boot of the system.

Well, it is the restart of Amarok after the full rescan that matters, else it doesn't show the updated database, but the old version.

I tried it again.

I use opensuse 11.1 with amarok-2.2.1-46.2 and Kernel 2.6.27.39-0.2-default.

The cd is ripped with abcde-2.3.99.6-58.20 and lame-3.98.2-1.pm.4.5. CDDB is used. These are no old mp3s from "strange" sources. Disc-ID is calculated by the original cd: 9d0e480d

I think the best is to show a screenshot, where you see, that some files / songs are ok, while others not.

The artist is always the same: Έλλη Πασπαλά and the album is always Στο Μέγαρο μουσικής

Amarok 1.4 and vlc have no problems with these files.
