Dear all,

I have a huge mp3 collection to rename and tag. After some research, I think the best solution is to use Picard (for general tag searching in MusizBrainz) and kid3 (for fine tuning tagging).

Because I like techno music, I have a lot of compilations and albums that have more than one CD. I have found the following problems:

a) Picard appends a (disc x) string to the album title, so Amarok does not recognize the album as being part of a multi-disc release. Needless to say, the disc number tag is not set by Picard.

b) Most compilations are listed in MusicBrainz as having artist "Various Artists", which is obviously not true (at least for famous DJs).

After some googling, I have not found a piece of documentation stating how the compilations should be properly tagged in order to Amarok to deal with them smoothly. Is there a FAQ or something similar that explains all the mp3 tags that amarok understands and use? Also, is there a Picard script to automatically convert the Picard tags to a format that Amarok can understand?

By the way, if you know a better way of organising a huge collection of music, please tell me.

Cheers,

mendi

I never used Picard, but you should definitely remove the Disc number from the Album if you want those to show up in the same album. There is a Disc number tag for it.
Also, if MusicBrainz lists them as Various artists then you should complain to them, there is really not much we can do about.

Tagging is very personal option, not everybody tags albums the same way apparently, it very much depends on what information you want to be shown. Hence that is one of the reasons we don't give advice on how to tag tracks.

Also, searching the forum should give you some hints.

Running Kubuntu 22.10 with Plasma 5.26.3, Frameworks 5.100.0, Qt 5.15.6, kernel 5.19.0-23 on Ryzen 5 4600H, AMD Renoir, X11
FWIW: it's always useful to state the exact Plasma version (+ distribution) when asking questions, makes it easier to help ...
