I have a USB 2.0 NTFS formatted drive and a local music collection. When I create an advanced search, my search only matches the local collection and not the external drive. A simple search matches songs both local and external. Is there a reason why advanced searches don't match through the entire collection?

Because the search only is performed in the database, hence the collection. Mount your drive permanently and add it as a collection location, then it works.
