qt_temp files

Tue Jul 13, 2010 5:50 pm
I always seem to get 4 or 5 /tmp/qt_tempXXXX files when running Amarok 2.x and they don't go away.

Is this an Amarok or a Qt problem?

Why is this a problem? The /tmp folder should normally be erased when you shut down the system, so I fail to see where there is a problem.

Almost all if not all GUI applications generate temporary files, that's what the /tmp folder is there for.

Running Kubuntu 22.10 with Plasma 5.26.3, Frameworks 5.100.0, Qt 5.15.6, kernel 5.19.0-23 on Ryzen 5 4600H, AMD Renoir, X11
FWIW: it's always useful to state the exact Plasma version (+ distribution) when asking questions, makes it easier to help ...

There's a few problems with your suggestion.

One is that applications should really clean up after themselves as a matter of good practice and not be sloppy. It's your garbage, pick it up.

Another is the assumption that people do shut down their systems, which is a rare occasion on my home central file server machine and the laptop that drives the TV and sound system. They are on 24 hours a day, 365 days a week, on UPS or battery. The one where I run the TV/sound system/amarok is probably updated once a year, if that, as if the setup works why touch it?

Finally, you're assuming that something cleans up those qt_temp files generated by amarok, but I've noticed on another machine, that I do reboot often to switch between WindowsXP (for work) and Fedora 13, that that is not the case, and they just keep piling up.

Not even when you close Amarok or logout of KDE?

Procedure:

file a bug

Workaround:

run a cron to clean up behind amarok

fwiw - I have no such files and I run amarok all day long. What is your setup/versions?

I haven't been able to determine exactly what is that I do with amarok that creates those files, and whether it is amarok itself or some plugin. I have all plugins disabled, except for Ultimate Lyrics.

I just removed the last set that was in /tmp and restarted the latest amarok (installed today from F13 updates) and they didn't show up immediately. I'll keep monitoring it and if I find a way to replicate the creation of the files from scratch I'll file a bug. I was just hunting for someone with the same problem.

And I don't use KDE, or GNOME for that matter. I log on using GDM but then run a .xsession with FVWM as my window manager. The existence of the files doesn't really bother me that much so I'll create a cron to clean them up. I just clean them manually once in a while.

I see qt_temp files showing in /tmp, but the size is 0 Bytes and they are erased when I close KDE, not sure this is related to Amarok in the first place.

I don't know why you get those and they are not erased. But that might well be related to the desktop and there is a job erasing these files when one closes down KDE.
