Amarok2 vs Amarok1

Mon Aug 16, 2010 2:04 pm
I'm currently still using the ppa providing Amarok 1.4, but I'm hoping to be able to switch back to the current release (so that I can get all the scripts working again, and other features that I'm sure are being fixed).

Basically, I desperately need all the functionality of Amarok 1.4, and the last time I tried (around Amarok 2.2, or early 2.3) Amarok wasn't quite back to 1.4's features.

So, is the current schedule to match 2.4 with 1.4?
ie: How will I know that the old features have been implemented and Amarok is back to what it once was?

As I understand it, it isn't intended for Amarok 2 to implement All of the features of Amarok 1. However, if there are specific features that are yet missing that you need you can request them specifically and unless there is a compelling reason for them to not be implemented they should get implemented in one of the next releases.

Which features do you use in 1.4 that you need available in order to make the switch?

I have to admit, I never tried Amarok 2 full enough to know all the features it was missing, so it's probably just a few.
The ones I need for an mp3 player are (that I'm unsure if Amarok2 has or not):

-being able to do complex searches in my library and playlist
-being able to create smart playlists (and regular ones also)
-a cover manager

The thing is Amarok14 has so many features I can't list them all...
Maybe I need to find another linux box (virtualbox) so that I can test amarok2 and amarok1 side by side. I'm not really willing to un-install amarok14 if it means re-installing again.

Edit: Global shortcuts... did Amarok2 have that?

I don't currently have amarok available to say for sure, but here's what I recall:

Complex searches - I'm pretty sure Amarok 2 should be on par with what Amarok 1.4 had.
Smart playlists - I've seen some rumblings about this on the forum; I'm pretty sure it's in 2.3, but you might do some double-checking to find out the official status.
Cover manager - Yes.
Global Shortcuts - I'm pretty sure it does.

I would agree that doing your VM test is a good idea for you to decide for sure, but I would imagine that you should be quite satisfied with Amarok 2.

Alternatively try a Live-CD.

But to the important points:
Cover-Manager: Yes
Smart playlists: Yes
Global shortcuts: Yes
Searches in playlist and library: Yes
(not sure what you mean with complex, if you give an example I will try that out)
Moodbar: Yes, analisation of music with tool
Automatic Gain: Yes, tool
Make Amarok look more 1.4: Yes
Detect removable media: Yes
Medialibrary on external device: No (not sure if 1.4 had)

I'm using Amarok 2.3.1

That might have been something for me before...
I used to have my library on a flash drive.

Amarok1.4 does handle a different drive. You had (have) an option of choosing the folder(s) (using check boxes) that the library includes.
I also remember using a symlink to point to different libraries, so I could move my library around without destroying it.
(all nice features that I don't necessarily need anymore)

How does the library work for amarok2? Basically it goes to the Music folder with no options?

It's basically the same as in Amarok 1.4 : a tree where you can check the folders for your library. The library is stored in a MySQL database. I don't know how to drag that one around.

Do you really mean Amarok 1.4, or Clementine ?

Why is this discussion not in the Amarok forum? I am moving this to the correct place.

Running Kubuntu 22.10 with Plasma 5.26.3, Frameworks 5.100.0, Qt 5.15.6, kernel 5.19.0-23 on Ryzen 5 4600H, AMD Renoir, X11
FWIW: it's always useful to state the exact Plasma version (+ distribution) when asking questions, makes it easier to help ...

I meant amarok1.4. I heard about clementine, but haven't had a chance to test it.
I still haven't had a chance to run a vm test to install amarok2.

Well, then please try it first, then tell us what exactly you are missing. Guessing without trying is not a good idea.
* For the automatic Playlist Generator (smart playlists) you need at least Amarok 2.3.1
* Complex searches are not available in the playlist, but you can do that in the Collection Browser where it belongs. Complex filtering is available in the playlist, though.

Ok. I guess that's what I was missing.
I'm currently trying to figure out how to upgrade to the latest kubuntu/ppa version. (I installed the backports, and upgraded amarok, but it complained of a compilation error).
Lucid (ubuntu 10.04) has 2.3.0, and it doesn't have smart playlists.

Maybe fast start and no MySQL for database?

I don't want trolling, but this two things, are important to me. Are they possible?

Cong06: the version from the backports PPA works fine, just make sure you don't have older Amarok versions installed for amarok-utils or other components.

Else, running
Code: Select all
kbuildsycoca4 --noincremental

usually fixes the "plugins not found" error.
