Status-LED and LCD integration

Is there a way for some status information to be visible with the computer screen turned off, like a small character LCD for the song title or some simple LEDs for repeat and shuffle status?
I don't know yet how I will connect these status indicators, but probably USB.

USB and then some D-Bus script.
