Hi, I am a Ubuntu (Gnome) user who adores several of Amarok's unique functions, but I'm afraid of the consequences of moving away from my so-far-well-behaved 10.04 LTS version of Ubuntu.
So far, from what I can see, the new Amarok is only available for 10.10 and newer. Is this a decision that will stay that way, or will patience reward me with the possibility to upgrade my Amarok from 2.3.2 to 2.4? There's another related question I haven't been able to find an answer to: when installing a new version of Amarok, should I first uninstall the previous version? |

q1 - that is a question best asked to the *ubuntu packagers, this site claims you can use the backports ppa for Lucid http://ubuntuguide.net/install-latest-a ... and-higher but I have no actual knowledge regarding if it will work.
q2 - the packaging system should take care of removing the old and installing the new, though obviously you could remove and then install but there shouldn't be any reason to |

Hi,
you might want to make a backup of the amarok configuration directory at ~/.kde/share/apps/amarok That will save your ratings in case of any problems. Otherwise I cannot see any problems with grapping a new amarok version. |

Following that site's instructions will install 2.3.2 for 10.04, not 2.4
iirc Amarok 2.4 requires KDE 4.6, which is not available for Lucid

That is the not the case, from the official release announcement "Bumped KDE dependency to version 4.4., and Qt dependency to 4.6." see http://amarok.kde.org/en/releases/2.4.0 - maybe you're mixing your kde's with qt's |

Sorry, I stand corrected on the kde version, but using the instructions provided will still install 2.3.2 in Lucid as there is no 2.4 package there for 10.04 One could to manually add the Maverick repo to Lucid, and it should work, actually; there doesn't look to be any significant dependency issues in the package for 10.10

Thanks for your replies. I tried running the installation instructions I could find for Maverick and Natty:
But it seems to be the same as for previous versions, and it says "amarok is already the newest version", referring to my 2.3.2 version. I hope to try a little further before I give in and install Maverick. |

Yes, that will only get you 2.3.2, as those commands add the repo for the version you are running. You can add the Maverick specific info to your Lucid system. Look here for instructions. The line you want to enter will be this: You must, however, make sure you DO NOT upgrade anything, just refresh the package list, install Amarok, then disable or delete the repo line You may have an easier time just downloading amarok, amarok-common, and amarok-utils and manually installing them from the commandline with dpkg. If you go to the PPA page, you can find the packages there, if you click the "view package details" line

I tried changing "lucid" to "maverick" as distro for the amarok PPA in my repositories. Then I tried installing amarok though the command line, and I got this:
I also investigated my Synaptic Package Manager (Gnome's KPackageKit, as I understand), which gave me the choice to upgrade amarok, but not without removing everything I know as KDE-based on my system, and upgrading phonon (which I do not use). But I suppose this is just due to the repository being "wrong". So as you recommended, I did nothing. So I downloaded the packages instead. The Package Installer won't let me install, partly because of the same problems in the quoted code, and partly because it can find 2.3.2. I will try to wrestle with dpkg when I find some more time soon. |

I installed all the amarok packages with dpkg, and when amarok wouldn't start, I tried installing the dependencies it wanted as well. I could only install two, and they made little difference, and after a short while, my update manager decided it was best to remove amarok altogether. Out of ideas, I gave my consent, and now I reinstalled amarok and I'm back where I started.
I don't suppose this was meant to be tried. While I ponder over upgrading to Maverick, here's the dpkg log, in case someone else should attempt the same:

Hmmm.
I will ask around if there is any possibility of building a Lucid package to the Kubuntu PPA, or adding it to one of mine. Barring the need for numerous backports of any libs down to 10.04, it may not be too hard to do.
