Amarok won't upgrade

Sat Aug 06, 2011 9:14 pm
I'm trying to upgrade Amarok to 2.4. When I try using the process described in http://amarok.kde.org/wiki/Download:Kubuntu Amarok doesn't upgrade.

When I try upgrading through Synaptic, I get;

amarok:
Depends: kdebase-runtime but it is not going to be installed
Depends: libgcrypt11 (>=1.4.6) but 1.4.5-2ubuntu1 is to be installed
Depends: libkdewebkit5 but it is not going to be installed
Depends: libplasma3 but it is not going to be installed
Depends: libqtwebkit4 (>=2.1~really2.0.2) but 2.0.0-0ubuntu1 is to be installed
Recommends: kdemultimedia-kio-plugins but it is not going to be installed

How do I get Amarok to upgrade?

You may also need to add the repository ppa:kubuntu-ppa/ppa. What version of Kubuntu are you running?

I'm running 11.04 Natty.

Adding that through terminal didn't add it to Software Sources.

What form of this repository do I use to directly add it to Software Sources?

Just use the following console command to add the respository:
sudo apt-add-respository ppa:kubuntu-ppa/ppa

Make sure you update and then upgrade; just upgrading won't necessarily pick up changes from the new respository.

If you still can't get it working, please paste the complete output of the following commands:
ls /etc/apt/sources.list.d/
sudo apt-add-respository ppa:kubuntu-ppa/ppa
sudo apt-add-respository ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

My system can't find apt-add-repository locally or in the existing repositories.

What repository do I have to add to get apt-add-repository?

It's in python-software-properties (for future reference, apt-file search filename tells you which packages contain a file with that name). This should be installed by default, though, so I'm not sure what's going on with your system.

Okay, you have lots of items in your apt sources which are not repositories for Natty. If you look in the output of the apt-get update command, you'll see lots of references to Maverick which shouldn't be there and will screw things up. How exactly did you upgrade to Natty? The release upgrade tool should take care of things like that.

Anyway, you'll need to remove from your repository list any repositories which don't reference Natty, and then re-add the desired repositories with the correct sources lines. The easiest way to do this is with the apt-add-repository command, which once again is in the python-software-properties package.

Once you've done this, run the apt-get update and dist-upgrade commands again and you should get updated properly without dependency issues.

Thank you. I was noticing the same thing.

So far as I'm concerned, I didn't upgrade to Natty, but that's what "About Ubuntu" says. Software Sources is set for LTS updates only, but I got updated to Natty anyway.

I manually changed all my repositories in Software Sources to Natty, but I 'm still getting what you see in my last post. I guess it will take some time to learn how to use add-apt-repositories.

the LTS release was Lucid (10.04), however you seem to have somehow gotten mixed repositories for Lucid, Maverick (10.11) and Natty (11.04). You can try manually editing /etc/apt/sources.list and the files under /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ to set them to the release you want (you might just try switching them all back to lucid, since that's what the original install was), and follow that with: sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get dist-upgrade.

However, such mucking about is very likely to totally bork the system, so I would recommend using a live CD to either fix the sources (copy from the CD) or reinstall the system.

BTW, in Synaptic, you can add new repositories by going to settings -> repositories -> Other Software -> Add, and entering the repository command there. If you are adding ppa repositories, you can just enter, e.g. "ppa:kubuntu-ppa/ppa" and it will set the repository up with the correct release version.
