webdesign

Thu Jan 06, 2005 5:34 am
Okay, since Chris accepted my offer, I need some informations regarding the website:

1) Do you want to keep the polls (which is completly useless for the moment) ?

2) Do I keep the \"Nectarine\" and the \"KDE\" logos in my design?

3) Since your website is built with Simpleboard Forum I will need to integrate it (still dont know how). If you have a better idea plz tell me.

4) If you have subject(s) in the main menu that you dont want to keep or just want to categorize them.
tell me.

5) Finally, do you want me to put anykind of copyright, since the website itself is not opensource.
e.g: © 2000-2004 amaroK, All rights reserved.

Thank you for any comments or critism (sp?)

The site is built with Mambo, not simpleboard. Are you planning to get rid of Mambo? I like Mambo, use it on a couple of sites. You can create a template for it and totally change the look for the site. Have you gotten the administrator password yet? Maybe they added it to your existing account, just go to http://amarok.kde.org/administrator/

First of all, welcome on board, Swaft. We\'ve been looking for a webmaster for quite some time, so it\'s great news to finally find someone competent :)

We\'ve already discussed some stuff on IRC, but I\'ll answer again here:

1)
Yes. The polls are mostly meant to be entertaining, like the slashdot polls. Sometimes we also use the poll to gather user feedback on important topics.

2)
No, not necessarily. I am also thinking that we may want to change our slogan \"The audio player for KDE\". It is too KDE specific I think, while amaroK really targets all *nix users these days.

3)
If you think there is a better forum software, then we can change it. But it should be a substantial improvement over SimpleBoard (which works kinda ok), and we must be able to import all existing postings.

4)
Yeah, the menu is getting quite long. Categorizing is a good idea.

5)
Hmm. Should the site be Open Source, like creative commons license? Or should we copyright it?

Well, I never worked with Mambo, but as long as I can adapt it with my layout (probably), I will use it.
Like I said to Chris, once I am done with the Alpha version (which is the GFX part) I will post it here to know if everything is okay with you, and then I will start he Beta version (which is the scripting part).

Personaly, I would copyright the website but clearly say that amaroK is a free software.

e.g:

amaroK Team (or w/e you want). © date1 - 2005 All rights reserved.
amaroK is Free Software released under the GNU/GPL License.

I\'ve seen many opensource website using this kind of copyright.

I will also try to include the polls on the main page, but I cant garanty it will be on it due to the design.
But if I cant put it on the main page, I will add something like Polls in the main menu or something like that.

well, now I g2g. :)

Yeah, this sounds good.

You can check out the Mambo Documentation. Probably easier to just look at some existing templates, at some places like Mambo Hut. You would design it like normal, just with occasionally php code to insert stuff like the menu and the content of the page.

So you meant that I dont need to care about Mambo for the moment? If yes, nice. I will learn the Mambo structure once the alpha part is done.

Wow, that sound good. I like the current homepage, but nice refreshment is always good.
Do you have any images of how it could look like? Or is it *secret*? ;(

Oh, and a wish:
I think the forum is a main part of the homepage. It would be great to show the latest x updated threats.

thx for the idea, I will think to that when I will be doing the beta version.

And yeah, I would like to keep it \"secret\" for now, atleast to the alpha release.
;P

curent: Completing the part 1 on 7 of the alpha version.

I know it seems long, but remember that I am alone to do the work! :P

I think so. You don\'t need to learn it to start off, but I would look at a Mambo theme or two to just to get an idea of how they work.
