Help building amaroK

Sun May 08, 2005 6:02 am
I\'ve followed the instructions on the wiki and I\'m stuck setting up a proper build environment.

I\'m not a developer, but I really like amaroK, and would like to track some fresh builds, maybe do some testing and log bugs. I\'m not really experienced with this, but I\'m not totally helpless. I\'ve already dealt with tweaking my environment to get past other failures in the configuraiton script (C++ had to be downgraded, had to install X11 libs, etc.).

I\'m running KDE 3.3.2. on a debian sarge/sid hybrid.

The basic problem I\'m stuck on for the last day or so is when I run the configure script, it fails with:

[code:1]checking for Qt... configure: error: Qt (>= Qt 3.2) (headers and libraries) not found. Please check your installation!
[/code:1]
After digging around, I decided to try to install libqt3-dev. I can\'t seem to get it to install because of dependency issues. It depends on libpng12-0-dev which can\'t be installed because it, in turn, depends on an earlier version of libpng12-0 than what\'s already installed, and anyway the version it wants isn\'t available in any of my repositories.

For kicks I tried installing a debian experimental version of libqt3-dev, and got warned with about 3 pages of upgrades, additions and removals of X11 and related packages that scared the **** out of me.

I\'ve asked for help on my distribution\'s bulletin board, but haven\'t heard anything back from a normally very responsive group in over a day. Hoping someone else on here may be running a similar configuration and have some suggestions.

Thanks in advance.

You really should decide if you want sid or sarge. A hybrid system will always cause dependency problems - as you see them here.
So this is no amaroK problem, as you messed up your system. So fix this and apt will help you to get all the libs you need for amarok (or try using the debian binary packages available, there you do not need the -dev packages).

Not what I wanted to hear, but thanks for the candid reply. I\'m one of those ex-Windows end-users who\'s fairly technically savvy, but not a developer. I\'m still feeling my way along with apt-get and where to pull packages from. I have to say that I\'ve followed the lead set by many of the \"elders\" on my distro\'s message board by mixing sid and sarge, not to say that it\'s necessarily a good practice for someone with as much (or little) experience as me. It\'s worked out mostly very well, with only very occassional dependency nightmares. Seems like most of the problems have occurred when I want to set up a build environment to build something from source, which is not the typical case for me.

In the case of amaroK, I\'m a recent convert from xmms, and am rapidly \"falling in love\". I\'d like to see the latest greatest stuff, and check out whether some of the problems I\'m having might be fixed in the latest versions, and maybe participate in some testing, hence my desire to build it. I\'ll have to weigh that against the as-yet-unknown consequences of taking your advice and committing to either sid or sarge.

regards,
john

Kubuntu always seems to have the most recent release of amaroK.

As further follow up, it occurs to me that I can load up a dedicated distribution for the purpose of building and testing apps like amaroK (no others in mind at the present, though I\'d want to remain as flexible as possible).

With that in mind, would you recommend sid or sarge? Or some debian-based packaged distro? [I\'ve only really played with debian, so I\'d prefer to stick to it rather than tackle another learning curve simultaneously].

Thanks in advance.

Well, if you want to use Debian, use Kubuntu. Before I read that, I was going to suggest Gentoo.
