amarok & amarok-svn in parallel

Wed May 24, 2006 6:14 pm
Hi,

I would like to play around with amarok-svn's source and so it would be nice if I could install the svn-version and my normal amarok-installation in parallel.

I run configure, for example: ./configure --prefix=~/amarok/_i --program-suffix=-svn

Then I add these lines to my xsession:

export PATH=~/amarok/_i/bin:$PATH
export KDEDIRS=~/amarok/_i:/usr:/usr/local

and restart KDE.

Now the svn-version from my home-directory runs fine.

But now I can't start the old amarok anymore (it's installed in /usr/local). I get the message-box that amarok couldn't find any sound-enginge-plugin and that I have to fix my installation-prefix.

And even worse: amarok-svn is seemingly doing something bad to my amarok-config in ~/.kde/...
If I remove those export-lines and restart KDE so I could use the old amarok again, the old amarok does not start at all (it just quits silently after these 'Loader'-messages). Fortunately I had a backup of my configs.

How do you manage this? Or do you use your development-amarok all the time? Or do you use XMMS?

Thank you for any hints!

I haven't tried this, but your best bet might be to keep svn installed while using 1.4.0 from a klik package. If you try this, let me know how it goes.

As the collection DB might change in the SVN version (besides other things), the versions might not be compatible. Besides installing two different amaroKs in two distinct locations (which should work), you also need to make sure to use the appropriate config files (the stuff you find in .kde/share/apps/amarok).
I am not sure how you can do that. Easiest way might be to use two different users (you can run KDE with one user and start amarok with another user from the shell with the su command).
