I followed the instructions in the wiki (since there's a fix in the current SVN code for a bug that renders 1.4.4 unusable for me).
Downloaded fine. But when I go to build: ----- [H:multimedia] make -f Makefile.cvs This Makefile is only for the CVS repository This will be deleted before making the distribution *** automake (GNU automake) 1.7.9 found. *** Creating acinclude.m4 *** Creating list of subdirectories *** Creating Makefile.am *** Creating configure.files *** Creating configure.in *** Creating aclocal.m4 *** Creating configure *** Creating config.h template *** Creating Makefile templates libamarok_gst10engine_plugin_la_LDFLAGS: variable `LIB_GST10' is used but `LIB_GST10' is undefined make[1]: *** [cvs] Error 1 make: *** [all] Error 2 ----- What am I doing wrong? It seems like I'm just doing the normal stuff to build an application, so I'm unsure of what else to try. Doc Evans |

Use unsermake for building Amarok SVN, not automake.

I expect that your advice is perfectly correct... except that I don't understand any of it
I simply followed the wiki instructions... ----- svn co -N svn://anonsvn.kde.org/home/kde/trunk/ex ... multimedia cd multimedia svn co svn://anonsvn.kde.org/home/kde/branches ... mmon/admin svn up amarok ----- OK, that all worked. Then: ----- To compile the sources (from the multimedia directory): make -f Makefile.cvs ./configure --enable-debug=full --prefix=`kde-config --prefix` make ----- which is what didn't work (the first step failed). How do I do what you want me to do ("Use unsermake for building Amarok SVN, not automake") [I don't know what automake is, nor what unsermake is, nor when either of them is used, nor how to change my build so that it uses the right one. There doesn't seem to be any mention of this in the wiki.] In fact, the wiki strongly implies that it is OK to use automake. It says: "If you have more than one version of automake, you may get: "*** KDE requires automake 1.6.1 or newer", try putting:". I don't receive that error, but the wiki doesn't mention at all that it is incorrect to use automake. Although, as I say, I have no idea what automake is, nor indeed whether I am using it. Are the wiki instructions broken? If so, maybe someone can correct them to help people like me who want to build amarok from source. |

Try the SVN script. You can find it in the wiki or at KDE-apps.

After having scripts break and leave me with systems in various states of borkness too may times, I'll pass on the script and revert to an earlier amarok, pending release of 1.4.5. Thanks for the suggestion, though. I've just been bitten too many times.

Your loss
The amarok-svn script dowloads and uses a local copy of unsermake if it's not already on your system. Are you specifically trying to get gstreamer working? I read a post on the amarok mailing list implying that it's broken at the moment anyway, so that even if you were to get support for it compiled, it probably wouldn't work.

Possibly, although I figure that the chances of a script properly detecting that I'm on a 64-bit system and checking all the dependencies and installing all necessary libraries in a way that they can be removed/upgraded painlessly later, is approximately zero
No; in 1.4.4 several database features related to ratings are not working right. I believe that these have been fixed in svn, which was why I wanted to try that. But I'll just wait for 1.4.5. |

N7DR,
Did you ever get the SVN to build? I'm new to SVN and the documentation is still wrong, I'm stuck with the same problem you have. Thanks |
