sorting albums / collection browser

Fri Oct 22, 2004 2:27 pm
Hi

Another little suggestion to improve usability of amaroK.
I can set 3 tag filter to sort my music collection. In my case the first 1st is set to artist and the 2nd to album.
Because I have partly up to 20 albums per artist (whole artist collections) I would prefer to sort the albums not alphabetically but by the year of release.
One can reach that only by setting "year" as the 2nd tag filter and "album" as the 3rd which unfortunately puts the albums name to the 3rd level. opening only the artists folder gives the following output which is rather not convenient:

Iron Maiden
1980
1981
1982
1983
1984
1985
...
2000
2003

only by opening the years folders I get the names of the albums, typically only one or two per year:

Iron Maiden
1980
Iron Maiden
1981
Killers
1982
The Number of the Beast
1983
Piece of Mind

and so on.

It would make sense to offer a sorting of the albums in the 2nd level either alphabetically or according to the year entry in the id3-tag. I could imagine to have the output of the albums name even together with the year on the 2nd level of the tag filter:

Iron Maiden
1980: Iron Maiden
1981: Killers
1982: The Number of The Beast
1983: Piece of Mind
1984: Powerslave
1985: Live After Death
...
2000: Brave New World
2003: Dance of Death

or another format:

Iron Maiden
Iron Maiden (1980)
Killers (1981)
The Number of The Beast (1982)
Piece of Mind (1983)

Very close to this issue is the displaying of the track names: amaroK is doing that alphabetically and not accoprding to the track number written in the id3-tag. I think there are no doubts that it would be an improvement if the original order on the album is maintained also in the collection browser.
Maybe you could consider my suggestions in one of the next releases of amaroK.

Thanks a lot

I used to visualize the structure in the collection browser but the board does not know it. Therefore an "improved" version of my previous post with dots - for those my first post was too weird:

One can reach that only by setting \"year\" as the 2nd tag filter and \"album\" as the 3rd which
unfortunately puts the albums name to the 3rd level. opening only the artists folder gives the
following output which is rather not convenient:

Iron Maiden
........ 1980
........ 1981
........ 1982
........ 1983
........ 1984
........ 1985
........ ...
........ 2000
........ 2003

only by opening the years folders I get the names of the albums, typically only one or two per year:

Iron Maiden
........ 1980
............. Iron Maiden
........ 1981
............. Killers
........ 1982
............. The Number of the Beast
........ 1983
............. Piece of Mind

and so on.

It would make sense to offer a sorting of the albums in the 2nd level either alphabetically or
according to the year entry in the id3-tag. I could imagine to have the output of the albums name
even together with the year on the 2nd level of the tag filter:

Iron Maiden
........ 1980: Iron Maiden
........ 1981: Killers
........ 1982: The Number of The Beast
........ 1983: Piece of Mind
........ 1984: Powerslave
........ 1985: Live After Death
........ ...
........ 2000: Brave New World
........ 2003: Dance of Death

or another format:

Iron Maiden
........ Iron Maiden (1980)
........ Killers (1981)
........ The Number of The Beast (1982)
........ Piece of Mind (1983)

BioMarco:

This is already in the current SVN - Version of amaroK (try that if you want) or wait until release of 1.3.

And the tracks are ordered by track nr (at least in current svn, but i think also in 1.2.3)
