Organization

Wed Dec 15, 2004 9:45 am
Hello,

Amarok is a fantastic music player, but it\'s music organization capability could be better/simpler.

My unorganized music is in music/incoming. It\'d be fantastic if I could select a folder in this directory (which is usally an album), search for and apply correct tag information (using musicbrainz), rename files based on tag information, and then move the files to a specifc folder i.e. music/genre/artist/album.

K-mp3 for Windows does an excellent job of this, and similar functionality in Amarok would make it a dream for me. http://www.kcsoftwares.com/index.php?kmp3

amaroK supports tagging nicely. Just move the files into amaroK\'s playlist and change the tags then(I\'m not sure it works when the files are not in the collection database).
amaroK doesn\'t provide a perfect tagging solution YET, but it will hopefuly improve in time.

Please also notice, that amaroK is not ment to orginize your files but rather your music collection generated from files.

For tagging and moving files I reccomend JUK(http://developer.kde.org/~wheeler/juk.html) at the moment.

Is correct and advanced tagging really a matter for a media player?
In the *nix world you would look for a tagging tool that supports all of your wishes.
In my opinion tagging in the media player is a nice feature to correct small failures in the tags.

Marcel, you are right that it\'s not absolutely necessary for a media player to support advanced organizational features. However, since the two are closely related, it would be far easier for the enduser to be able to do it all in one program.

Amarok already supports tagging (and does a good job as xatax mentioned), as well as tag retrieval via musicbrainz. All it needs now is directory creation, file renaming, and file moving based on tag information.

These simple features would basically eliminate the need for any other music organization program and propel Amarok\'s uberness even higher =]

BTW, I checked out juk, and it\'s not bad. But it doesn\'t support genre tag information in file renaming! Arggggggggh!

This is really off topic, but, i\'m surprised by people suggesting batch/auto tagging of files via MusicBrainz. Just because it tags my files wrong about half the time. =].

Otherwise, i don\'t really see any reason to keep advanced tagging/renaming out of the program, if there were someone who wanted to code it. It doesn\'t seem like a big step from what\'s already available in the program. But then it doesn\'t really matter to me, i just do it by hand through amarok, anyways.
