hello, i know i\'ll get some flack for this, but i wouldn\'t mind seeing a windows port sometime in the future, with cd to mp3 ripping possibility. this would put windows media player out as well as winamp. don\'t get me wrong, i love linux (i\'m dual booted with mandrake 10.1 and use amarok) but for those who would like to be able to switch back and forth while maintaining a common (open source) player with playlists and such would be wonderful.

IMO this will happen short after they finish to port KDE to Windows.
Or the IE port for Linux. SCNR, Marcel |

It is currently being discussed whether the upcoming KDE 4 should be ported to Windows. Personally I think it\'s a good idea - if someone wants to port it, there is no way to prevent it anyway, after all it\'s Open Source. There are some KDE folks who are opposing such a port. They fear it would hurt Linux in the long term. Personally I think that\'s paranoia, but hey, we\'ll see.
If KDE gets ported to Windows, there is indeed the possibility to port amaroK as well, especially since GStreamer (and xine?) already runs on Windows. Me, I\'d welcome such a port, even though I don\'t currently use Windows. Choice is good.

integrated CD ripping shouldn\'t be a priority at all. as far as a Windows port, amaroK uses libraries so whether its ported or not is up to the folks that maintain the various libraries really.

I would really like to see amarok on Windows because I left Linux but the last application I used there was amarok but I cannot use Linux only for music playing!
Maybe you take a look at the Qt-KDE Wrapper Project: http://iidea.pl/~js/qkw/ With this library it\'s easy to port KDE apps to Windows! Please take a look! |

That only works with LGPL software according to that site. Plus someone would have to write a windows sound engine.

You can\'t really expect linux programmers to code stuff for windows? (Ow and it would be very difficult considering that we would need a taglib, soundserver and some other libs for windows)

well, a windows version of amarok would sure be fun.
but please. if it ever happens: let us forward the windows bug reports straight to /dev/null ....muesli |

*Sorry can\'t help myself
The more time that is spent cross compiling, redeveloping and debugging for a windows port of amarok, takes away from development in Linux. Furthermore, one must question motives for developing FOSS on Windows Propreitary OS. Linux is built from the contributions of many working for a common goal. IMHO, i don\'t think Linux developers should waste their time porting our quality applications for a propreitary operating system which does not every give anything back to the community. Such actions are similar to the nerd doing the homework of the popular students; thinking that one day they will appreciate his work and make him popular (not insinuating anyone is a nerd, just intellectually able). The student doing all the work is further separating himself from his peers and hindering his social skills while being used in the process. My point is the only benefit of porting KDE and Amarok in particular is to Microsoft Windows and its users. Amarok is by far my most favorite application on Linux, I couldn\'t say more about an application. The extremely active development is exciting and it reminds all of us what OSS is all about. I think everyone in the FOSS/OSS and KDE communities should truly contemplate using their talent to develop for Microsoft Windows. Whatever your opinion, and I know my opinion differs from many of the Amarok Developers, thank you for all your hard work!!! Amarok has advanced media on the Linux Desktop more than any application I have experienced. Joe my 2cents |

i know this is getting OT, though.. how would this be possible? windows is a GUI likewise to KDE. i could imagine that KDE would get damn slow if it would be run in windows? well, IMHO the time could be spent better.. |

dont worry. i don\'t think any of us devs is running windows at all. so we prolly aren\'t involved in that process in any way. so there\'s no time for amarok development lost
thanks for the kind words! regards, muesli |

Yea, if the dependencies and amaroK ever make its way to Windows, you can rest assured it will be done by Windows developers not Linux developers. That just makes sense. Like EU or UN translators usually translate their 2nd language into their native language.

If we want to port amaroK to Windows, we will, arguments that somehow I am wasting my time are strange, it is after all, my time to waste. My mum wants to use amaroK and there\'s no way she\'ll ever stop using Windows.

Me too. Switched to Windows, but iTunes is not so good as Amarok: no "suggested songs", so "other albums from this artist" with covers, and no automatic rating, that I always loved... |

i use windows at work, and i have installed gaim and other GPL applications. it would be great to have amarok as well
