The most amazing player I have ever seen. I seem to find new features all the time so if my suggestions are somehow already available, forgive me.
I am thinking of using amarok in a bar/restaurant setting to control the music. There are two things that would make amarok much more usable in this setting. 1) the ability to construct playlists without affecting the current playing ( or active ) playlist. For example, the playlist window(the one on the right) might have tabs - one for the active playlist, and some others for playlists which are under construction and not about to be played. \"Appending a song\" would then append the song to the playlist which is being displayed. 2a) In a restaurant setting, one never wants to hear a song being cut off and a new one starting abruptly. Like any other player, it is very easy for this to happen with amarok. One accidental double-click on a playlist entry or even just one accidental click on a context entry, and that song immediatly starts playing. Some configurability would help here. I would just like to be able to remove the possiblity of a song being interrupted ( somehow ). 2b) Since I don\'t trust others very much, I would also like to be able to turn off the options to edit files and/or remove them. This is a little tricky, because I also want others to be able to construct playlists. It would suffice if i could configure some of the menus ( and pop-up menus ) myself in order to remove some of these options. I hope i have made myself understood. Again, amaroK is the best thing i have ever seen. Thanks so much. dan |

Tabbed playlists are a planned feature for later versions. Currently you can use the Undo/Redo system for playlist construction.
Adding options is always a tradeoff between configurability and usability. We don\'t usually implement features which are only used by a small minority of users. This "restaurant mode" would be such a corner case, I\'m afraid. But why not simply mount your music partition read-only? Seems like the natural solution to me. i too would like to see an option that says click an item song means Queue Track as opposed top play now.
Winamp allows this. However adding readonly functionality is a inconvience to those who don\'t need it, whereas either a: Raising permissions on your music aka root or super user will protect it much better a from accidents in amarok as well as other factors. or b: plain set it to read only but they will be a pain in the **** if you happen to need to edit it. or c: Set the HDD partition with the music Readonly in FSTAB then nothing will edit damage or destroy your music even during a crash. |

It is good to hear the playlist tabs are coming.
As far as the menu/popup menu configurablity I suppose it may be a little much. I want to again mention the problem about songs being interrupted by accidental clicks or double clicks. A) it would be nice if double clicks queued the track instead of stopping the current song ( as another poster suggested ). The \"play now\" command could be a pop-up menu entry. B) it would be nice if the click and double click commands were universal. It seems strange that single clicking a context window entry starts up the song, while double clicking evrywhere else does the same job. and I have more........ C) In the collection menu, it would be nice to have more information. I find that the rating system could be very useful, but that information isn\'t available from the collection window. The possibility of adding a few more columns would be nice. They might contain i) rating ii) last played iii) and so on This would be very useful in contructing playlists to make sure you are not repeating a song every night. Clearly, I am still thinking about a particular setting, but I think others would find it useful too. ok....that\'s it for now. thanks again. P.S. I feel bad about complaining about something which is so f***ing great. |

I think giving amaroK a kiosk-mode would be a good idea. Doesn\'t really entail more options, it\'d just be a new feature.

Not a bad idea. But let\'s better make sure it can\'t be activated accidently. I can see it now: "My amaroK is broken! Half the features ain\'t working!!!!!!111"

Hehe, I could see that clearly as well. We would need to figure out something obvious before implementing like a watermark for the playlist.
