better collection section

Wed Jan 04, 2006 10:15 am
Hi there.

First off: I really love amarok. Best player ever!

Now. I don\'t know if this is addressed in 1.4 development already, but I\'d like something like the following in the collection section.

Generally, I have four types of mp3s on my system.

(1) albums
(2) audiobooks
(3) compilations (e.g. Ska collection etc.)
(4) single files

I\'d basically love to have subsections in the collection view to differentiate between:
(a) music and audiobooks
(b) albums and collections

At the moment I have my stuff ordered by Artist - Year + Album, which doesn\'t play nice with collections / samplers and I also find audiobooks placed in between my music wrong...

I\'m not sure I described my wish properly but I hope you get what I meen... :-)

Cheers!

Hey guys. The posting above seems to be a bit old already now, but I wanted to reply here, as I have a similar wish.

My collection of mp3 (and mostly ogg vorbis) consists in very big parts of audio books. I don\'t know about anywhere else but here in Germany audio books are becoming more and more popular, and I assume in english speaking countries they may have been even more successful already.

I like the idea of beeing able to differate between music albums and audio books, also between compilations and albums (although I think this is already handled well) and single files (because often - more with nowaday\'s music then older one, I\'m afraid - you like only one song of an album and don\'t want to waste more disc space when you only listen to this song regularly). I think, it should be more addressed... I don\'t like having speech titles from audio books interfere with my music hearing when using dynamic playlists or reading the suggestions what to listen next to. I even don\'t like audio books been listed in my music album collection.

So this leads now to not having audio books in my collection setup at all, they\'re in another directory not added to collection. But I\'d also like to be able to use them comfortably in a second collection manager. It would also be great to sort albums automaticly looking at the genre tag (\"speech\" by default, but enabling the user to add others).

Well, it is only another posting of another generally happy user :)

so, with interest in your opinions

your talking a basic category system. you create categories, like music, books, radio broadcasts, etc to categorize the items in the collections screen.

you can call them what you want, groups, categories, etc, but thats what they are.

i like it.

I understand what you need/want but to me adding another layer of categories to the collection view feels confusing. Ideally everything(UI) should be kept as simple as possible. How about implementing this with smart playlists somehow? A simple idea would be a smart playlist that allows you to add a path that\'s not in the collection.
