I think it would be nice to be able to write and use scripts to open artist/album/track pages on sites other than Wikipedia. The first choice that comes to my mind is pages on Last.fm, but of it would open up many other possibilities. Of course, Last.fm has very different kind of information on an artist from what Wikipedia has. But that makes the option even more useful.
The cover art look up could also be script-based so that covers could be found on Last.fm, Wikipedia, Google, etc. This should be able to apply for tag-fetching as well. So basically, these features should go through what the lyrics-fetcher has, to offer more flexibility and more information. To make the new options introduced by scripts available, the user interfaces could have a drop-down list to select which script to use, keeping the selection sticky, or like the lyrics fetching, alow only one script for each purpose to run (I don't like this as much, even for lyrics, but maybe this is easier for the current system). It might seem that this proposal is solved by just writing new amaroK scripts. I don't have experience with the scripting system, but it seems to me that scripts aren't yet allowed to take over at least some of the features required. Maybe they could easily open webpages, but they will lack UI integration which the built-in features have. Correct me if this is wrong. |
