Bigger/better EQ?

Wed May 14, 2008 5:54 am
I love Amarok, but the one thing that bothers me is the equalizer. It's pretty wimpy (only 10 band? :P) and it doesn't seem like it does much of anything to boost or cut any frequencies, at least compared to most other media players.

My only request is that you get a slightly bigger and better EQ for Amarok 2. Other than that, I love Amarok. I have no issues with it and use nothing else.

We Amarok devs mostly think that messing around with the sound doesn't do much good. I don't think anyone of us devs uses an EQ, so we have little incentive for working on it.

In Amarok 2 the EQ currently isn't functional, and it's unclear whether it will make it into the 2.0 release. It would need to be ported to Phonon.

To clarify: it will likely make an appearance at some point in Amarok 2, just right now it looks like Amarok 2.0.0 is going to be missing a few features and the Eq is likely one of them. When it appears it will probably be better then the current one, since gstreamer is likely better at it then Xine.

But I'd agree that unless your a DJ and actually sit there and adjust sound for each song (I've done this at a dance once back in the artsd days), that an Eq isn't very handy. The whole matching Eq settings to a "genre" thing is a myth in my opinion, probably started by stereo manufacturers wanting to create new features where none were needed.
