Dear all,
I've just started to use amarok 2. I am on Ubuntu and I felt the podcast management was not as good as in v1.4. That's why I wait the last minute, but ubuntu 9.04 comes with v2 so I finally tried it. And I am so so disappointed. The main reason I started to use amarok in the first place was for the podcast. The fact that you could create folders with specific properties and have some subfolders with other properties made it very flexible and far to be the most powerful podcast reader. And believe me, I tried them all. I listen about 40 podcats a day. So this folder thing was perfect. Now there is no hierarchy nor inheritance. It's all flat. And is as poor as iTunes or any other podcast reader. Well, I may have missed something. So if you have any suggestions on how to manage podcast, please let me know. If not, and if the developers want to improve the podcast management I'd be happy to suggest ideas. Regards. alex |

I'm also incredibly disappointed with amarok 2's podcast abilities. I mainly use amarok to sync my iPod with new podcasts. I upgraded to Ubuntu 9.04 and amarok 2 was automatically installed over my old version. Here are my issues with amarok 2 and podcasts, and if anyone has any idea how to work around these issues I would love to hear from you.
1) I have 30 gigs of podcasts sitting inside the .kde/share/apps/amarok/podcasts directory and NONE of them show up in Amarok after the upgrade, although the other mp3s in my collection do show up. In fact, Amarok seems to have lost ALL information about my podcast subscriptions. 1b) If I want to listen to any of my previously downloaded podcasts in amarok, I must open them from the terminal... since amarok seems to have a phobia for browsing hidden directories. 2) I can transfer mp3s to my ipod perfectly fine, which is nice. But, when I download a podcast, this new version of amarok won't let me transfer that podcast to my ipod. Apparently, the only thing I can do with a podcast once it is downloaded now are the 4 options: append to playlist, load, delete, re-download. It seems like Amarok has taken the "remove options and make it look pretty" approach and has wrecked the functionality side of things a bit. Actually, since I really only use Amarok to transfer podcasts to my ipod, the functionality for me is wrecked entirely. |

Hello !
A possible work around is to create a link to the hidden folder from your library's folder. For example : suppose that your library is is in /home/user/Music, then execute user@computer:~$ cd Music user@computer:~$ ln -s ../.kde/share/apps/amarok/podcasts/ MyPodcasts Then you will have a "folder" called MyPodcasts (actually is a symbolic link) that will let you access easier the files in the hidden folder directly from amarok interface. Hope it helps somehow. |
