Amarok usability

Sat May 22, 2010 3:15 pm
I take Amarok as one of the few truly professional-quality music management systems, including those available for Mac and Windows. It is also fully iPod-compatible, including the use of album covers. For these reasons I want to continue using it. After an upgrade to my Ubuntu OS to 10.4 I needed to upgrade from 1.4 to 2.3. However, the new software has the learning curve of a skyscraper. Having seen 100s if not 1000s of complaints of 1.4 users over the 2 last years year or so I expected some problems but I am really struggling to use the new version. I have no problem getting used to a new paradigm of using the GUI but I would like to have some help in effecting the change in paradigm that I need to undergo. At this moment I am completely stuck.

The Amarok handbook at
http://docs.kde.org/development/en/extr ... ia/amarok/
is clearly outdated (some 4 years old) and does not deal with the same version. In fact, some of the figures in that manual dates back to version 1.4.

The user guide at
http://amarok.kde.org/wiki/User_Guides
is just a text on some very specialised topics and even then the text is pretty sparse.

Now to the root of my problem. My iPod Classic 80G does not show up on Amarok, even though it is fully mounted and navigable on the Linux desktop. Rhythmplayer reads and plays it no problem. But Rhythmplayer is rather primitive in many ways and I would like to pursue continuing to use Amarok.

At this stage I am stumped and if I continue at this rate I will have to downgrade the Amarok on this system down to 1.4 in order to do useful work. If there is any systematic and comprehensive help out there, would you point me in the right direction, please?

We're at work on a new Handbook; it's just awful that there is none right now. As with all of free software, it's volunteer time that's wanting.

How to get your ipod (or other media device) to work with amarok 2: http://wp.me/pKriD-9

Hope this helps,

Thank you for your help. The link above did solve my problem.
Even if 10% of the manual is complete, I think it should be published, even as a work-in-progress.
Please send me a link to the manual authoring team so that I may perhaps do my little bit.
Kind regards,
willem

Hey Willem, thanks for your kind offer. We need to have all the text vetted before turning it over to the docbook team. Giving people incorrect or confusing information is worse than giving them nothing, in my experience. If you are interested in being part of our documentation team:

Drop by our IRC channel irc://irc.freenode.net/rokymotion
Join the mail list: https://mail.kde.org/mailman/listinfo/amarok-promo

All the best,

Valorie
