Wallpaper for fastforward 1.4

Sun Nov 26, 2006 7:31 am
This is the final version of the Live CD wallpaper for fastforward 1.4. We combined the various elements from all of the artwork submitted at the Live CD artwork contest.

Points of interest: The wolf is standing on an EQ visualization. Notice how his paws sink into the funky grass.  The Live CD Logo itself has a CD back behind the wolf serving as a symbolic backdrop.

Here is the final source file for the wallpaper. This includes .svg .xcf and .png's

Note: You must be logged in to see the image and or download the attachement.

not sure about the CD in the logo - it kinda gets lost. Have you thought of perhaps a CD as a watermark type pattern across the background? dunno if that would look too busy or not.

note, only a first impression after I set it as wallpaper :)

A CD watermark is in fact too busy. We toyed with a similar idea and found it to take away from the overall presentation. The idea behind the CD as a back drop for the wolf logo was meant to be very subtle. So as to not break with the currently established branding. If it does not work and a majority feel the same way we can very easily change it to match the official Amarok logo. Thank you for your input and keep it coming.

I like that wallpaper.  If you could make a version without a the Live CD text and in a higher resolution, I'd use it as my personal desktop background.

dangle and i talked briefly on the subject just after you left channel, and when she came with this suggestion, in combination with how the current background looks, i thought "aurora borealis"... As in, use a CD's glittery rainbow type gradient, but subdued like it is now - only use it as an aurora borealis... If that makes sense :)

I think I understand. But I do need to clarify. So the idea is to watermark a CD in the background behind the wolf. This CD would then have a aurora Borealis or multicolor type of gradient. Or are you referring to the CD in the Logo to have this effect?

We will create such a wallpaper for you and anyone else interested. We will upload it to the general wallpapers post when it is ready.

i am indeed referring to the wallpaper itself, and not the small logo :) Really, though, i'm thinking a REALLY large CD, so you really only see a tiny bit of it... like the lower right quarter of it or something like that...

This would be in addition to the current background or replace it?

Here is a quick proof of concept on your idea.(minus the moon glow.)

I think the wolf's silhouette needs to be improved. I like the EQ idea but it seems to me that the wolf doesn't look much real.

I have added the fastforward.1.4.wallpaper.svg file that you can download and tweak on. Any improvements are very welcome. We have yet to finish the logout dialog image. This means you will have at most three days after we upload it to get any improvements you come up with in place. Thank you for your participatioln in this whole process.

Should there be a few wallpapers for the users to choose from to give them a little bit of customization? I know it's a live CD and space is limited but KDE is about customization and fitting it to what you want it to look like. At least two or three choices for the user even if the images are not in the best quality due to compression, Most live distros I have give a few options to choose from.

This is a good question. At this time we are merely finalizing the default wallpaper for fastforward. We are not really in a place to discuss any additions due to time constraints. However this will be something for the artist team to address after the Live CD is launched. To sign up to be a part of the artist team go here and follow the instructions.

Quite simply: No.

There's your answer then.
