Krita Sketch?

Mon Oct 08, 2012 2:19 pm
Now is Krita sketch going to be a Krita but for windows? Or is this going to be like sketchbook from autodesk? I understand it will have different features since it will be capable with windows 8 but is it going to be as flexible as Krita?

Krita Sketch and Krita will both be available for Windows and Linux. Krita Sketch is more geared towards touch input. The feature set is very similiar to the one in Krita, but not like Sketchbook. It's a bit less flexible than Krita e.g. no dockers like in Krita.

Ah okay, I thought sketch was going to be the windows version of Krita or something. Since the Windows version isn't getting a lot of love :P

Well, while sketch works fine on Linux, it's meant for publication on Windows 8. It is almost done, too. Of course, I had expected to be fix quite a few windows-only bugs for Krita Desktop while working on Sketch for windows, but that didn't happen. Also because of some real life issues, which meant I haven't been able to publish updated Windows packages of Krita desktop.

But honestly, in the end, it'll always be the same equation: if windows or osx users want krita, they either have to pay money to fund development, or do it themselves.

I cant for personal reasons and hardware malfunction use Krita at the moment but some time ago I made move to Linux - not completely, just for Krita really, which is without a doubt superior on that platform. I knew nothing about Linux but it is really easy and you can find lot of help online on official IRC channels. It is worth of it if you think seriously about using Krita. There is absolutely nothing to be afraid about Linux - give it a shot.

On another note - I thought that development of sketch version of Krita is funded by some company..?

I don't mind paying for this when it comes out.
Anything to support development of Krita.

Hopefully this makes it to Android at some point. Once Google Glasses are out, I suppose I'll begin fantasizing about that next. Imagine drawing with your finger on a blank, mock canvas while Google Glasses does the rest. I can dream, eh? But anyways, I digress. I'm happy to see that the source is available, which at the very least means that it's a possibility.

We (that's KO GmbH) already spent some money trying to bring other calligra apps to android. The bits and pieces aren't really in place yet, though, but it's unlikely to take much longer before it's just another supported platform.

Let me just say that the very second Krita Sketch touch down on Android I will walk out and buy me a Galaxy Tab 10.1. The one with the wacom like S-pen. Gah a Cintiq like tablet with Krita... (I honestly drooled a little just thinking about it :D )

Ha! Yes -- that would be a great combination. And we (that's KO) actually have gotten kdelibs + the calligra libs ported to Android already, as well as the Words, Sheets and Stage applications. Though only as proof of concept: they were too slow and crash-prone to be usable, Krita might be a bit more complicated, though, and certainly more demanding.

That's right,Android is not developed for supporting high end Painting applications.
Infact Procreate (recent update)is only app on iPad as of now which supports Resolution as high as 4096*1714 pixels.Krita sketch supports a resolution of 10000 * 10000 pixels at maximum. This much high resolution is supported neither by iOS nor by Android.Plus the professional quality of work produced by Krita needs high computing power, which Android or iOS does not have.
Artists should work on Windows or Mac,not on Android or iOS.
Krita's Desktop version works with a concept termed Infinite Canvas.
Reference:http://www.google-melange.com/gsoc/proposal/review/google/gsoc2012/shrikrishna_holla/1
Well that does not mean that canvas is infinite in size.It only means that the maximum size limit for Krita is so big that no one would have used the maximum size available in Krita Desktop, not even a professional artist, not even for big movie posters. Its super High Defination Canvas.

Amon Shah: I'm hoping and assuming you mean "PC and Mac" and not "Windows and Mac"...

Krita Sketch for Android would be brilliant because I can take a tablet out and sketch up concepts, return home a dump them in the laptop to finish the work. I strive for mobility personally and even though I have a desktop I prefer using a laptop and a small wacom tablet since it means I don't have to stay at home all the time working.

That said: I'd rather wait than stress the KO team. They have enough on their plate already

Definately Krita sketch would be brilliant on Lower cost Android Devices,I am not disagreeing that.
My Point is that technically,Krita Sketch version for android would be too much Trimmed down version.
Generally Android devices do not support so much high processing power.Infact Krita Sketch freezes immediately on my dad's windows 7 laptop for medium size images. The lasso tool do not work for medium size images.

Not because, this is bug,but because the configuration of my dad's windows 7 laptop is too low to support Krita sketch in this situation.(Offcoarse, high configuration is obviously available in market for windows).

Android tablets are obviously less powerful than a convertible laptop or simply a laptop.

Android devices would be ready for Big tasks and big size images only when Google decides to compete with mainstream Computer OS and wants to make much powerful Android OS for mainstream Laptops and mainstream Tablets.

Processing ability depends upon the clock frequency of the piezoelectric Vibrating crystal.
I have ordered a tablet with high configuration:3.6 GHZ Core i7,8 GB primary RAM,so that Krita desktop or CAD/CAM applications or any other application do not stuck frequently on my new Convertible tablet PC.It features allmost 13.3 inch screen(Diagonal).

Even if Krita sketch is launched on Android,Krita developers may have to restrict maximum canvas size to 2000 * 2000 pixels.
Krita sketch on Windows supports maximum canvas size of 10000 * 10000 pixels.
Remember that Android is made for fun filled low power tablets with limited Processing speed.

If you are looking at compact portable workstation as indicated by you (10.2-11.6 inch),why not try these:

http://www.paceblade.com/index.php?id=4

http://www.kupaworld.com/Products.html

http://www.asus.com/vivo/en/vivoTab.htm (Asus Vivo Tab,not Vivo Tab RT)

http://www.samsung.com/global/ativ/ativ_pc_pro.html (only for this tablet in the list here,I am not sure whether it comes with Wacom stylus)

Make sure you don't get Windows RT,get windows 8 or Windows 8 Pro.I heard that Windows RT would only support apps from App Store.I heard that RT would not support external downloads or softwares.

NOTE: Krita sketch might hang on these devices due to low processing speed.

If your Requirnment is high processing speed,
There are expensive choices:
1)Asus Taichi 31 (13.3 inch) (N-Triq unlike others which support Wacom stylus,Krita may not support pressure sensitivity for N-Triq)
2)Asus Taichi 21 (11.6 inch approximately)(N-Triq unlike others which support Wacom stylusKrita may not support pressure sensitivity for N-Triq)

3)Mod Book Pro from Modbook Inc. (modified version of MacBook, supports stylus, runs Apple Operating system as well as windows 7,13.3 inch)

4)Fujitsu Lifebook T902. (13.3 inch)

5) Motion Computing J3500 (12.1-12.6 inch)

6) Range of Tablets from "Tablet Kiosk" ( http://www.tabletkiosk.com/ ) (12.1-12.6 inch)

7) GamaTech (Durabook) u12Ci (12.1 Inch,windows 7,I wish that it should be windows 8 )
http://www.gammatechusa.com/PRO/U12Ci/

Best Wacom penabled stylus to use with tablets supporting Wacom Stylus:
Motion Computing J3500 wacom Stylus (many MC stylusses are available,Go for this: Additional Digitiser Pen-Black)

http://www.motioncomputing.com/choose/spec_pen_L.htm

I recomend Motion Computing stylus because unlike most other wacom penabled stylus, this one has as small & as precise nib as which Wacom Cintiq stylus has. However, whether its suitable for the glass of your tablet PC or not is what you might need to check before ordering it.Some glasses are to delicate to resist so tiny small nibs and may scratch. In that case,I recommend Toshiba/Durabook Wacom DIgitiser stylus.

Especially the Wacom stylus provided with Fujitsu Lifebook T902 is not at all precise.
According to Wacom support,Any tablet bearing "Penabled" official Wacom's Logo is compatable with any of the Presently offered Wacom Penabled Stylus pens.
Note that Wacom Penabled Sylus pens cannot be interchanged with N-Triq Stylus pens as both are based on Different technologies.

Good N-Triq Stylus:

The N-Triq pen provided with Taichi is surprisingly precise, not expected from N-Triq.Most probably, same is not the case with other N-Triq supported tablets as of now.I always previously hated N-Triq pens for Precision Sketching.
Note that N-Triq stylus pens cannot be interchanged with Wacom Penabled Stylus pens as both are based on Different technologies.

I have provided detailed info as of now for best Windows tablets.
Now you have to decide!

I think you missed my point: I don't own a Windows-PC or a Mac, I use a Linux PC. I work professionally as an illustrator - and not on either windows or mac.

Krita sketch on Android would be nice. Not to replace my current laptop or my desktop but simply as a sketch-alternative. Sometimes in the future I may invest in a tablet-PC with Linux preinstalled if possible (or with a solid way to install Linux) but that would be a cost for later instead of now. Thank you for the suggestions though (the Sahara Slate with Linux preinstalled seems nice) - but its not what I'm after.

I'd prefer not buying an OS I would either have to uninstall (which is money wasted) or where I had to install allot of software not really made for it. Krita sketch works perfectly on Win8 and Krita desktop works well on Win7 but I use allot of other great programs too. Hassling with the installation of them on an OS where the manufacturer seems hellbent on forcing me to use other, substandard programs, is not something I'd pay money for.

My point is: I don't like to spend money for the spendings sake. I donate to several Linux projects because I get repaid tenfold and I use the things I have instead of buying new ones. Android would be lovelly since I may get my hands on one and my husband already owns one.
I'd rather spend my money on rent, food and bills.

Thanks for your views.Unfortnately, preloaded Linux OS with a PC is not much available in India, neither Linux is much known to Indian Audience.!So I would not know much about Linux.

I do support Open source softwares, but just for your info, incase if you find it useful:

http://www.tvpaint.com/v2/content/artic ... enbeta.php

Recently,I heard TV Paint animation is going to be launched on Android and Prelaunch trial version is already available for free download. This prelaunch version would work once downloaded for a limited period of time, irrespective of the date of download, just like what Microsoft did for windows 8 before official launch.(I am very sure that it would hang,Krita sketch already hangs on moderately powerful windows Tablets on regular daily basis.)
I find TV Paint to be a very decent sketching and animation software, but I wouldn't suggest to use android like less powerful OS to be used for highly detailed professional sketching and painting.
TV paint is running already on windows, available in two versions.student discount is also available(I would suggest to get student discount somehow.).

Demo: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ASCVncX7Xc

I wish to see Krita on Apple iPad and Android devices, but the main question still remains:Will this be technically feasible??? :)

Even if its feasable, you would only get a downsized version of Krita Sletch,or I should say 70 percent knocked down version of Krita Sketch.
It would not probably support canvas size of more than 2000 *2000 pixels and that's not the Size most professional artists prefer.
Krita sketch on Wondows can support sizes upto 10000 * 10000 pixels.

Also I don't expect many brush engine configurations on Android powered Krita Sketch. These brush engines needs lot of Coding. These Codes consume lot of microprocessor power.

Krita sketch would hang on 2 GHZ microprocessor,4 GB hard drive and 250 GB additional standard memory.
Do you think that Krita sketch would run without hanging on a 1.6 GHZ Tablet PC running android with a configuration of 32 GB memory space ???

The only way to bring a practical version of Krita is to invent a new type of program or coding which would take less space and would perform as good as regular Krita sketch versions.

Always remember that most Android devices carry a low speed Processor of about 1.9 to 2 GHz and hence please always expect Krita sketch to hang on most Android devices.
