Re: Krita 2.9 wish list

Hi,
I am sharing my Krita wishlist, not for 2.9 but in general. Don't know what the devs need to prioritise but I thot I wud throw it out there anyway.

* Ability to select multiple layers
* Distort Transformation tool
* Bezier warp tool-current warp is cool but gives 'polygonal' look many times and its very difficult to get lens distortion like effects
* Ability to save warp presets-FishEye and Inflate,etc.
* Separate pressure curves for Opacity and Flow
* Bigger swatches option for predefined brushes-I often make one preset and then just change the brushtip, like for trees or rocks,etc.
* Full L.a.b support-all layer modes and filters work predictably
* Dependable import of SVGs-no crashes
* GMIC filters preview
* GMIC filters work on selections and not just on whole layers
* Cutout filter if possible
* GIMP 2.10 like high quality scaling algorithms

I might have repeated some things already mentioned or in the works, but this just my personal list and I hope it helps.

One thing in particular is VERY intriguing (apart of absolutely amazing, animated paint mixing - just see the whole movie or even better download that tiny software and try for yourself!) and I wonder if that would be possible in Krita (probably with many vanishing points). The way perspective grid is implemented:

Would that be possible to include in Krita? Maybe even author could help - its a free experiment not a big company so who knows. Links to download program are in video description.

That's why I pinged the author on g+ -- if he makes his work open source under a compatible license, there's little that would stop us. Well, apart from it being written in some kind of basic :-)

@portnov
Current 2.9 makes it possible to adjust size of palette swatches size. Not by pixel number but in steps. using CTRL + mouseWheel over the swatches view.

About presets size. As far as master goes, brush presets icon size grows or shrink depending on how many presets visible. So after filtering with a tag to get fewer brushes, preset grow considerably. However, it seems the re-size trigger happens only after explicitly resizing the dockers width.

I'd say that this is actually buggy behaviour -- ideally it'd work like the the palette docker, with a fixed size that can be changed by the user.

Good idea.

I'm not sure I get this wish.

monkeyPlanet wrote:* Dependable import of SVGs-no crashes

This is very unlikely to happen for 2.9 or even 3.0. Basically, the problem is that we load svg through an svg to odg filter (odg being the native graphics format of LibreOffice Draw), and that gives problems. There's quite a bit of code to add direct support for svg, but it was written mainly for karbon and isn't finished.

However, please do report any crash you have importing svg and any case where svg is loaded incorrectly.

Fixing the vector tools is a long-term plan, but it is something I really want to happen.

monkeyPlanet wrote:* GMIC filters preview

Probably tricky... g'mic being so slow.

monkeyPlanet wrote:* GMIC filters work on selections and not just on whole layers

Yes, that's very likely to happen. In fact, there's sponsorship for this already.

monkeyPlanet wrote:* Cutout filter if possible

Please make a wish on bugs.kde.org with as much information as possible.

monkeyPlanet wrote:* GIMP 2.10 like high quality scaling algorithms

Are these the algorithms Nicolas Robidoux has been working on? He promised to do them for Krita, too, but then he turned out to be too busy.

Right I didn't have time to go through the feature request bugs, so some things are already mentioned by others.

* Bigger swatches option for predefined brushes
What I mean is say I have downloaded around 20 tree PS brushes and have made only one preset with a high Spacing so I get one tree every click. And then I would simply select a different brush from the predefined brushes window to have different trees. I dont have to make 20 tree presets. So if the thumbnails in the predefined brushes window are bigger it just makes selecting them a lot easier.
I have made a very simple GIF of screenshots
http://gifmaker.me/PlayGIFAnimation.php ... Z5fcCD.gif

* Cutout Filter
This link is the best description of its use
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c8_YaaRpVKY

*GIMP scaling algorithms
I am not sure , I was referring to the NoHalo, LoHalo , etc. algorithms.
http://www.gimpusers.com/tutorials/what ... -gimp-2-10

I have made the necessary wish bugs reports and also voted for the rest. I am looking forward to future of Krita.
Thanks boudewijn

The cut-out filter looks like it's a trace-bitmap-to-vector, but then rasterises it.

Monkey-planet, if you use Inkscape's 'trace from bitmap', how does it compare?

I didnt think of the trace bitmaps feature in Inkscape. I tried it and It works very similarly. Achieves the abstraction of shapes anyway.
Thanks TheraHedwig.

I still think we need a priority list for this ... but for me on the top is a streamlined brush system. The inability to easily create and store brushes is one of the biggest hindrance with Krita. Transferring brushes over creates problems for me.

Can we please have a list :3?

Yes, I'm all for making a roadmap list out of this thread (and the one on the mailing list). We need one for the fund raiser, too :-)

There is work going on for making and installing resource packs, but it's not ready for prime time, though I still am hopeful to have it done for 2.9.

Nos that I'm getting more and more confident with Krita I'm finding a serie of things that could get polished in the way they work, but all in all the software is pretty solid already just as it is: it's just a matter of getting used to the way it works.

One thing that would make a great difference to me and to anyone who uses touch gestures for pan and zoom would be disabling the software ability to lay down brush strokes when you're using your fingers on the canvas!
Anytime I pan or zoom with two fingers I have to be very careful not to leave any stray marks or strokes around and even being careful I still manage to leave unwanted and dangerous marks (generally just a stamp of the brush tip) around that I notice only when it's too late.

Hope to be able to make some bug reports soon. :)

Response has been great, and with so many wishes and ideas it was hard to keep track.
Updated the first post with all the wishes and works in progress so far mentioned. Some bugs have notes and some others are fixed! Yay!

New wish:
* New Filter layer for transformations. So transform and warp becomes a non destructive action.

I haven't seen him make any more commits since July 2013 ... actually GIMP is moving slowly. Perhaps they aren't very vocal now, or I'm not seeing much movement.

Side note: I'm bit of a peeker, so is this here the github or equivalent for Krita? Just .... wanting to nose around. Interesting that talking of projects gone silent - chiliproject seems to be as well. With the coders moving to plan.io and the members creating guides to move here. Is that an issue? *shrug* Don't know.

Since this is a wish list, do we have a similar tool to trim in krita? I use it quickly to cut extra white space in scans.

Yes, that there is our main git repo :-). KDE is blessed with some extraordinarily awesome system administrators, and our infrastructure is second to none!

As for the trim feature, please do make a wish-type bug report. We might not implement all wishes in a timely fashion, but it's our main method of keeping track of things.

That's good. I can now stalk knowing I'm looking in the right direction.

Well I've wishlisted it here https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=333462. Hopefully one day, but it's isn't massively important.

I think that retaining the last brush size for each variant would be great. Currently it gets the default size each time you come back to a previous variant.
