FYI: To get Krita to work in Linux Mint 17.1 with the Cinnamon interface:
After performing the standard Software Manager installation, Krita would not run, displaying a message to run kbuildsycoca4.exe. This required running the following commands at a terminal prompt...
kbuildsycoca4 displayed a message saying it could not find "applications.menu." I ignored it and tried to run Krita. Krita seemed to run fine, but displayed some messages, none of which were fatal. Some of the messages were: krita(5233)/kdeui (KIconLoader): Error: standard icon theme "oxygen" not found! Could not find 'klauncher' executable. krita(5233)/kdecore (trader) KServiceTypeTrader::defaultOffers: KServiceTypeTrader: serviceType "ThumbCreator" not found krita(5233) SpaceNavigatorDevice::start: starting spacenavigator device... connect failed: No such file or directory krita(5233)/kdeui (kdelibs): No such XML file "/home/steven/.kde/share/apps/" krita(5233): Couldn't start knotify from knotify4.desktop: "KLauncher could not be reached via D-Bus. Error when calling start_service_by_desktop_path: The name org.kde.klauncher was not provided by any .service files krita(5233)/kdeui (KNotification) KNotification::slotReceivedIdError: Error while contacting notify daemon "The name org.kde.knotify was not provided by any .service files" If there are other packages to install that would eliminate these messages, I'd appreciate the information. Previously, I've run Krita solely on Windows. It runs SO much faster on Linux. And while I've never had a problem with brush lag on Windows, brushes just seem so much smoother, solid, and under control on Linux. Fantastic! |

Well, the latest (2.9 beta) versions of Krita don't need kbuildsycoca. All the other messages are just noise you can disregard.

Thanks! Good to know.
The Mint Software Manager installed Krita 2.8.5. I've been running the 2.9 betas on Windows. I just now went to the Krita Downloads page and see instructions there, too, on installing for Ubuntu/Linux Mint. |

After running Krita on Linux Mint 17.1 Cinnamon a bit longer, I noticed there were no icons displayed in the toolbars or layers panel!!!
Some searching found this problem, plus a related problem with klauncher, have been experienced before, as described in this thread from a user trying to run Krita in Ubuntu: https://forum.kde.org/viewtopic.php?f=139&t=117242 After installing the two packages listed in the linked thread (oxygen-icon-theme and kdelibs5-plugins), Krita runs better, but there are still some warning/error messages. Here's my complete Krita log after opening Krita from the command prompt, creating a new image, and then quitting Krita.
Seems like the Krita dependencies are not exactly accurate. And/or the Ubuntu/Linux Mint installation instructions on the Krita website need to mention the two missing packages. Finally, there still seem to be one or more packages missing, such as that Kdecore KServiceTypeTrader "ThumbCreator" service. I haven't been able to locate any information about which package that's contained in. |

I'm not even sure it's relevant for Krita: it's probably something that creates thumbnails for a file dialog -- but it's really not an error. About Krita's dependencies on *buntu: that's a long standing issue the *buntu packagers should fix...

Hi
I'm using Krita on Linux Mint 17 Cinnamon. I haven't felt the need to upgrade just yet as everything is fine ( to 17,1 that is) My biggest problem was finding a repository with the latest stable version. As Krita is on !.9 RC at the moment I battled. Just some advice on this. Stay away from ppa:cheleb/ as this does nothing. Use ppa:dimula73/krita The same goes for Blender 3.7a use ppa:thomas-schiex/blender I've had no problems as yet with any of the programs under Mint 17. Just thought I would mention this as I know how frustrating it is. |
