That is true, but selling brush-sets, artwork, reference materials and tutorial videos as dlc would be an additional source of income. If this is worth exploring depends on two things from my point of view: 1. Can it be done without creating much work for the core developers? ( we want them to have more time for coding, not less ) 2. Would enough people be willing to donate resources for this purpose? ( they wouldn't need to be exclusive, after all krita sells on steam even though it is freely available on the website ) |

Selling brushes and so on is technically feasible, but even in the KO GmbH days when we had two people working on Krita for Steam we simply didn't have the manpower to set it all up. Right now, it's already hard to keep steam updated!

Hey guys, one of the PureRef creators here. I just saw you mentioning us and this is an interesting subject so I'd just share what we know.
We use pay-what-you-want, but users can always download PureRef for free. We don't use download links sent through email, it's a direct download(redirected back to our page after donating if you choose to). If you're planning on a steady income I would not suggest using this method, we've roughly recieved one monthly salary for one person worth of donation, in two years, before tax. Our only expenses is the webhosting so it's a tiny gain nonetheless but we both have full time jobs on the side. When we released PureRef we did not have the time to look up licenses so PureRef is not restricted in any way. Our goal was not to make PureRef a successfully selling product, but we thought donations would be a way for us to keep up the motivation. |
