Supporting it would mean that it would switch Krita from GPLv2 to v3. Since the license also prevents it from being used in other software packages, I guess they will change the license at some point or it would get reimplemented. It's also stated that it's still experimental. So the format might still change in the future. Beside that none of the browsers etc has adopted it yet.
For these reasons it shouldn't be added just yet. |

Website says it's an unfinished work-in-progress, and will make format-incompatible changes in the future. I'd wait until at least the format is finalized.
Also, the claim that it's not covered by patents is rather dubious, since (as the website itself says) it uses a CABAC-like arithmetic coding, which is basically what h265 uses, which is heavily covered by patents. |
