Hi !

I just wrote an article about Software Community Engagement from a User Point of View.

Some of my examples came from my great experiences within Krita's community (the KickStarter campaigns, the support of my The Most Powerful Features in Krita for Digital Painters article), so I thought that you may find this instrospection interesting.

Thanks again for Krita !

Cheers !

Thank you boudewijn,
What you do with Krita's community is very inspiring, and your good practices surely motivated me for the writing, as I thought that other softwares maintainers could learn from you :)

Good luck with next very promising versions of Krita !

Cheers !

The only thing that is a bit a non-truth is the whole 'social media makes you near your users'. Social media, especially Facebook, work in such a way that you may think that everyone in your group is seeing your posts, when in fact, only a portion is seeing it.

The alternative to "use social media" is "don't use social media" so the point about some social media (complete agreement that Facebook is behaving unethically) being less-than-inclusive is moot. Engaging on a spectrum of social media to maximize points of engagement is a brilliant strategy, and while no strategy can reach everyone, it will certainly reach more users than remaining cloistered on older systems which may not be frequented or even known of by most users and even many developers these days.

Engagement requires having someone to engage with, and that requires using more than one channel of communication, and until GNU-Social and other free software alternatives develop into places for everyone (I honestly hope that will happen, but even if it does, it will take a lot of time and work) there will be no alternative but to brave the chilly, often hostile waters of proprietary social networks to welcome users and developers into the fold.
